Subject: '90 O/D swap to 727 or 904 IP: Logged
Message: Has anybody swapped a 727 or 904 in place of the automatic O/D transmission in a 1990 V6 Dakota? The biggest difference I see is the overall length of the transmissions (the O/D is about 7 inches longer!!),how to fabricate a crossmember and/or rear mount, and the driveshaft needs to be longer.
ANY help or suggestions would be GREAT!!
THANKS!!

Message: They did have dakotas back then without the O/D in the. I had an 88 that didnt have O/D, it is sitting in the local wrecking yard now :'(
So your best bet is to just locate one of these trucks and take what you need.

Message: It's just a different tranny mount that bolts the tranny to the crossmember. Remember that depending on the tranny, your O/D converter may not work.... meaning, it the 3 speed a lock-up unit or not?

Message: Thanks for answering!
I really don't know what this other transmission is yet, it's out of a '92 Ram 250 van.. I know it's shorter than the O/D trans in the truck, but I don't know about the lock-up part. I don't care (much) if it locks up or not, I won't be using this truck anywhere other than just in town. (Probably 45 MPH tops!)My other trans choice is definately a 727, no lock up.
The van trans has a cable that hooks to the kick-down linkage, and appears to have been connected to the throttle body on the van. Does this need to be connected to anything or can I just leave it hang?

Message: Yes, it has to be hooked up unless you run a full-manual valve-body in the tranny. It's vital to the normal function of the tranny even with a shift kit. Leave it off and it'll burn up.
