Subject: Clutch Fan IP: Logged
Message: Can someone please explain the benefit of removing the clutch fan? I've read of a number of people doing this. Does it increase performance? And, how do I remove it?

Message: Removing the clutch fan frees up a few horses that are otherwise wasted turning it at speed. It may also improve your milage somewhat.
To remove it, you need to loosen the nut holding it on to the waterpump shaft. Use a large adjustable wrench, and strike it (the wrench) with a mallet. Make sure you either already have an auxillary fan in place (2000 and up models), or replace it with an aftermarket piece, such as a Black Magic 150.

Message: My freind and I both took ours off. I notice a little on the top end. Most of the benifit can from a lot less vibration. A good reason why so many fail at a early age.

Message: Ok here's a possibly stupid question...My 2003 has an aux. fan in front of the clutch fan, (looks like an electric one), So why do they put two on there in the first place, if you guys get better power without them?

Message: I have a '01 Qaud,4.7 auto. Removed my clutch fan about a year ago. So far I've noticed close to 1/4-1/2 mpg. and better response through rpms.
I live in south west florida and pull my deckboat with the a/c on and so far the needle on the temperature gauge has never hit the halfway mark yet.

Message: I noticed that my 2002 4.7L had the electric fan also. I only saw it come on when I turned the AC on. I'm guessing that it comes on when ever you turn the AC on. I'm sure it would kick in if the engine temp got hot enough. Mine never got hot enough.

Message: From what I've read on here is that the aux. elec. fan comes on when either the A/C is turned on or the water temp gets up around 210 degrees. If you want it to come on earlier some people have put a thermostatic switch that turns it on around 180. I recently had my fan clutch go bad so I yanked it off. Haven't gotten up to 210 yet on the temp. but it's only 30 degrees outside right now.

They put both for redundancy, idling w/o the a/c on, etc. The 3.7's only come with the electric.
Just cause there are two, doesn't necessarily mean you need them. I've caught alot of flack years ago, for taking mine off. Even towing is not a problem.

Message: It's a win-win situation. The electric fan does pull current from the altenater which will use up the HP you gained by removing the clutch fan.
Buttt.... The electric fan won't be on most of the time. The clutch fan is on every time you step on the gas. Therefore, most of the time, you will see more HP at the wheels by removing the clutch fan.
I would also think that the water pump's life would be drastically increased.
