Subject: 4.7l fuel requirements and PCM flashes??? IP: Logged
Message: I have question for all you dodge experts!!!!
I recently filled my truck up on 93 octane ( i
usually use 89) to "clean it out" so to say....Now
i have noticed that since i put the 93 octane in i
am getting better performance and higher gas
milage!!! i am also curious if when they flash the
computers that is it possible in the programming
that they reset the fuel requirements to a higher
octane?!?!? i know on TNN the show trucks i saw
teh flash a GM truck or was it a chevy truck,
anyways i saw them update the computer with
hyperteck reprogrammer and you could select what
type fuel you want to use....so it made me
think??? Do they do that with the dodges too???

Message: We have been talking about winter gas on the borad,I'm wondering if you live where it is cold?I was going to suggest to the people that are getting poor milage, to try a higher octane.. I'm going to try it.That is a good question on the computer...any one have a answer. (Bernd)

Yes you can. Marty (over at KRC Performance) can reprogram the PCM's to whatever you'd like (within reason though). Something like a more advanced/agressive timing curve will require higher octane fuel. He can also remove the speed and rev limiter (or set it to where ever you want) and change the shift points as well.

The Hypertech Power Programmer isn't available (as far as I know) for the 4.7L...yet. But you can contact them at: http://www.hypertech-inc.com. (I checked their website and they don't list it for the 2000+ 4.7's.

Message: I don't mind the thought provoking old posts. I have found that my 4.7 likes about 2-3 gallons of 93 mixed with the 87 octane. I have minor pinging on straight 87.

Message: I wonder why, are you lugging it in the gears with a manual tranny ? I've had mine flashed up to 29 degrees advance and it still runs fine on 87, only need the premium when towing. That's with the auto trans and 3.55 gears.

Message: I have a 4.7 5-speed RC with 3:92. I will clarify that it only pings up very steep (East Tennessee) hills or mountains, in 4th or 5th, but not lugged. The pinging is very slight, but I prefer NO pinging. $.60 a tankful (extra cost of three 93 octane gallons) is pretty cheap insurance.

Message: You're absolutely right. I always wondered why some claimed the 4.7 pings when mine doesn't - the extra load you can put on it with a manual transmission seems to explain it.
