Message: Hey all.
Today my 2001 Dakota was acting like it had a dead battery, would not crank... Got a jump start and it ran fine for 120 miles continuous. However, the ampmeter was pegged the whole time and the 'check guages' light was on (to tell me that the amps were full tilt)
At the end of the drive I shut the truck of, then attempted to recrank... Nothin. During the whole drive the ampmeter never dropped from pegged.
The battery window shows green fluid. indicated 'good'.
Question is - Bad battery? Or something worse?

Message: The "green" window shows only a chemical aspect of the battery. You have a bad battery that is probably shorted or ???? The ammeter tells the story and you could ruin the alternator if you continue to operate in that condition.
I have had many batteries show in the window that it's just fine, but ends up shorted or whatever.

Message: Have you got a manual transmission?
There is a recall out for Dakotas with manual transmissions. The clutch peddle many be rubbing on the wiring harness causing erratic electical problems and a fire hazard.
