Subject: Removing decals IP: Logged
Message: I want to remove my tailgate "4x4" and "Dodge" decals to give it a cleaner look.
I had both doors replaced last summer and had them just save me the decals.
Question is after 5 years will I be able to just rub out the tailgate or will the outline show too bad..
Its left outside at work but inside at home.. Thanks.. P.S Dealer did the doors because they had a few bubbles of rust starting on the inside lower bead. You guys may want to check yours after 4 years or so. Don't let them touch it though unless you trust their body shop..

Message: I haven't personally tried this, but I posted the same question a few weeks ago. Everyone told me to just set the truck in the sun for an hour so, or use a hairdryer to heat them up. They're supposed to come right off. They did mention I might have to buff off the outline, but some said they never had an outline.

Message: I used a razor blade. Not one scratch anywhere after using this method either. That hair dryer/sun technique is bunk, tried that. Don't know about any paint fade after 5 years though.

Message: I removed mine with a heat gun, they came right off. I had waited about 8 months, though, and now you can see the outline really bad in the right light. In most light, though, you can't tell a bit. I would be wary if the truck was 5 years old. My truck is the "dark garnet red", though, so I think that exacerbates the outline.

Message: When you remove the decals from an older vehicle, what you see behind the decal is unfaded paint that has never seen the sun's UV rays. The more pigment a paint has, the more the "shadow", thus reds and blues show more. Use a heat gun or hair dryer at a 45 degree angle to the surface to keep from burning up the element. If you must use a razor blade, obtain a plastic version from a body shop supply.

Message: I just did mine on the tailgate and doors, It turned out great! Get a heat gun and heat it and they come right off and what ever sticky sh*t that is left can be hell but...... 3m makes a remover for that and it works great (Sold at wal-mart) and then get some buffing comp. and put it on a terry towel and rub out the hole tailgate .If it worked on my BLACK truck it will work on any color.

Message: The best way to get the sticky stuff off is to use a lubricant like WD30. Just spray some on, let it sit a minute, and scrub it off with a paper towel. just make sure you wash the spots you put the lub and don't let it set too long.

Message: dakota0two: take it a step further and flatten the paint out with #2000 wet sand paper and then compound (to take the factory orange peal off).
It's a slippery slope, though, as you will want to do the whole truck after having done the tailgate, or whatever panel. Takes a lot of time, but is it ever worth it!

Message: I used a hair-dryer and a plastic putty knife to remove the stickers, then Goo-Gone to remove any residue. There was some residue left, but I found that if I let the Goo-Gone soak in for a couple of minutes, it then came off with just a little scrubbing.
