Subject: BEWARE! Powertrax Lockers IP: Logged
Message: I would strongly caution against buying a Powertrax locker! I had a No-slip Powertrax Locker installed 1.5 years ago and since then it has appeared to be a good locker. Worked well off-road and was also very road friendly. Turns out though, that its a P.O.S.
I am currently having gears put in my truck at a local shop that specializes in nothing but diff repairs and upgrades. This morning I get a call from the shop indicating that my locker has very worn teeth and springs and that they would not recommend reinstalling it as it will fail in the near future. Keep in mind that the shop already knew the locker is under warranty(2 years), so they didnt even try to sell me a new one, and since the install of a brand new locker would already be covered by the labor im paying to have the gears installed, they wont make anything on that either. Bottom line, they really dont have anything to gain here.
So... called Powertrax and was told that I would have to ship the original locker back to them for inspection before they would even consider replacement via warranty. Digital pictures, taken by the rear-end shop (third party), would not be acceptable. This means that I would be without a functioning vehicle (this is my only vehicle) for at least a week and probably more with no guarantee of a replacement being approved anyway. The person I spoke with at Powertrax was not the least bit sympathetic, and was not open to my suggestions. Even when I pointed out that if I had to wait a week or two for a replacement, I wouldnt be able to have the replace locker installation covered by the labor im paying now for the gears. This means I would again have to pay for the locker installation, even though it's Powertrax and their faulty parts causing me all of this trouble. I will never buy one of their products again!
Bottom line, I called the diff. shop back and discussed the issue with them. They indicated that they were not suprised and that the shop stopped carrying Powertrax products because they were routinely having problems with them. At no additional charge, they also offered to piece together an original limited slip for me, so that I can get my truck back on the road.
I will still send the No-slip out for a warranty inspection, but even if they replace it I will never put one back in my truck. E-bay, here I come.

Message: Had my powertrax one year now, no problems. Of course I was smart and kept my original spider gears and cross shaft so I can easily remove the powertrax and be back on the road again in a couple hours.

Message: Your right, seems like this shop really wants to go the extra mile. If anybody in the San Jose Bay Area is interested, I would be happy to E-mail you their info.
Mark Green 92 - I will try to get some pics of the damaged parts and have them posted this weekend.
92Dakota4x4 - I thought I was also smart by saving all of the original gear, which is sitting in my garage. Problem I had was that everybody was at work today and I couldnt find a ride to drive me and the original parts down to the shop before it was too late in the day to install them. (Their closed on weekends and I have to have my truck on Monday) Oh well, thats life I guess.
The shop called at 3 to let me know the truck was done, so Im just waiting for my ride to show up. Definately looking forward to at least having the 4.10's. Guess maybe this is my chance to upgrade to a Detroit Locker sometime in the near future.
Thanks for the support guys!
