Subject: ticking sound

I have a 2000 4.7L club cab 2 wheel drive 5-speed dak. It has 61,000 miles on it. That's not alot of miles, but it has been driven pretty damn hard for all of the miles it does have. After the engine warms up there is a ticking noise coming from it. I used a dowl up to my ear to find where it is coming from and it seems to be up front on the passenger side in the front of the valve cover. If I slowly give it some gas the sound slowly goes away. My guess is that it is the timing chain, but I'm not totaly sure. Has anyone else had a similar problem or know of a fix? Also, if I have to strip it down to put in a new chain and guides is there any performance things that I can do while I'm in there?
