Message: Comparing a '71 anything to a new dakota is senseless. I consider my self an enthusiest also. If I had the time and space I would LOVE to get myself a project car. While dakota's are certainly nice, they are far from something to take serious pride in in my opinion. Your talking about a 30 year old car. I wouldn't consider it disposable by then either. I don't think there are many vehicles made within the last 10 years or so that I would consider indisposable. In 20 years I picture myself handing my son the keys to......many things that weren't made the same century that he was born in.
99dak- simply because I choose to use my extra money on cars doesn't make it poor asset management. You use your extra cash on ??? The get rich quick thing was a joke tough guy. I'm living my life just fine right now. When I'm ready for a family, many of the toys I enjoy now will have to go away. Either way by the time I'm ready to stop working I'll be doing just fine. As will any other person that made smart decesions with money. Your making it sound like 50 GRAND in 10 years is going to make me rich. Retirement planning and investing is a whole new topic.
Eddy- bs flag lol, that's one of my favorite sayings. I do still owe just under 16k on my truck. I also said that I'm paying 0% interest so buying it outright would have been of no benefit. At the time I bought the truck, for 21k, I had about 17k left over from college so your right, I couldn't have bought it out right at the time, but I could have bought the ranger I mentioned. For the record, i'm glad I went with the dakota.
So the old man on the farm didn't want it. I just hope that the other guy is still interested.

Message: One more thing. This isn't wasn't I expected when I posted this, but I have gotten some good advice and decent conversation. I'm suprised it hasn't gotten ugly yet. Maybe we've discovered that asking for "advice" is a great way to weed out the immature folks.

Message: Jeremy - You seem to be taking all of this in stride, and that's as it should be. I just can't figure out why one minute you seem to be saying that your purchasing (or leasing) decisions have more to do with pleasure than practicality (which is totally fine), but then in the next breath you're talking about saving, investing, and building wealth.
One of your responses to me was: "Your making it sound like 50 GRAND in 10 years is going to make me rich."
Yet you're also the one who said: "If in a position to save even a little at a young age, almost anyone can retire as a millionaire."
Ok, lets run the numbers. If you invest that 5 grand a year, even at a modest 5% return, in 35 years you've got close to half a million (avg 10% return would bump it to 1.5 million). And 3 grand/yr of after-tax money in a Roth IRA grows TAX FREE.
Again, if you're not that concerned about it, I think that's fine, but you keep making remarks that indicate you are.

Message: If at the age of 16, you save 2000 per year. (an easy summer's worth of work). Each summer you put that 2 grand into a savings account. By the time your 20, that's 8,000 plus the minimal interest you've recieved from the bank. Put in into a roth account like you said. At age 67, assuming the 10% average, you will have 1.16 million, never having to add another penny to the account. By the way, it's only tax free after a certain age. I believe it's 57. I'm saying if leasing a car were going to decrease my way of life in the future then I wouldn't do it. I'm doing fine now, and I'm set up very well for the rest of my life as well. Good luck meeting a 16 year old willing to invest for their retirement, I the money i earned in high school for college. Which turned out to be the best investment I made.

Now it is clear where you're coming from - it just took a while to get you to say it (which is, oddly enough, to your credit).
