Subject: Inner Tie Rods... IP: Logged
Message: I just read a thread that said the inner tie rods could not be replaced without replacing the entire steering rack. This guy had a 2000, I have a 97. I wanted to know if this was true, because I had new ball joints put in about 3000 miles ago and my mechanic said I needed to get new tie rods since I got the ball joints, and I've never had new ones(101,000 miles and not shot). I found the tie rods on rock auto's site, but I need to know if the inners can be replace separate from the rack any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Message: I did some checking on the site and there are people that have replaced the inner tie rods, but my question is how in the hell does dodge get away with saying that the entire rack MUST be replaced. To me, that just seems fraudulent, and it can be proven to be false. How would they answer that?

Message: I don't know what the 4x4 steering looks like, but I replaced the tie rod ends an my 00 2wd Dak with units from NAPA a couple years ago.
Dodge says they only come as an assembly with the rack? The rack has a threaded rod and the tie rod has a threaded hole. Guess they are too lazy to screw the rack and tie rod together, just like they are too lazy to replace only the defective ball joint.

Message: I've never done it to a Dakota, but I've replaced the inner tie rods on 2 different FWD Dodge cars. I would assume that Dodge's design for both is basically the same. They are a MAJOR pain in the ass to replace. I rather replace a front axle in a FWD Dodge than replace an inner tie rod. I would hope that the rack is easier to get to on the Dakota than the FWD cars. My service manual on my 1989 Turbo Shadow said you had to remove the rack in order to replace the tie rods. NOT!! This was a factory service manual that I paid almost $100.00 for. I replaced both inner tie rods without removing the rack.
I've said it 1000 times, NEVER TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE DODGE DEALER!!! THEY WILL SCREW YOU BIG TIME!!!
The dealerships are half the reason DC can't make a profit. They rip their own company off with bogus BS like "you half to replace the entire rack". Then they do it under warranty and DC pays for it. Then DC raises the cost of the new vehicles coming out to offset the money they lost at the dealership.
Terrorist should focus on car dealerships instead of high rise buildings. They would be doing the whole world a favor!

Message: Hey guys,
It was my truck where the entire rack was replaced and that is the only way to get them. I checked with every parts store in town and no one carried the inner tie rods only the outer. Now this is for a 2000 4x4, the entire steering system was changed in 2000 so you guys with a 99 or older can probably get inner tie rods.

Message: Well the tie rods I replaced 60K ago were the outers and one of the passanger inner tie rods is bad now. So it looks like I will be replacing the inners (and outers for the heck of it) in a couple of weeks and getting another alignment. rockauto.com has the 2000 Dak 2wd inner tie rods for $41 and the outer tie rods for $32
Anyone replaced the inner tie rods? Looks like the boot needs to come off the rack and unbolt the outer tie rod end. How does the inner tie rod attach to the rack and pinion unit?

Message: Gashog,
The dealer will also tell you that the upper ball joint comes as an assembly with the upper control arm. We all know that's false. If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times, don't go to the dealer for anything because they will SCREW you!

Message: Well DSW my FSM just shows the rack as one unit, doesn't break
anything down. Guess they intended the mechanics to replace
the whole thing and not even monkey with it. I've got the inner
tie rod ends sitting in a box here, they are Moog parts. It is
basically a shaft about 18 inches long, wth 4 inches of threading
at one end to be screwed into the rack and the other end has a
roundish ball attached to it with about 1 inch of threading on it.

Message: Anothermark, I have done the outer tie rods, so the plain threaded end of the inner tie rod goes to the outer tie rod and the threaded end of the inner tie rod with the ball goes into the rack "somehow"??? This is what I want to find out is how the inner tie rods attach to the rack unit. Someone said there is a special tool needed when replacing the inner tie rods, I guess it holds the rack or something like that.
Where did you get the inner tie rods, rockauto.com?

Message: WipLash, you should check it out again. Maybe call chrysler 5 times like i did. With a 4x4 2000 model Dakota i couldnt find anyone with JUST the inner tie rod ends, only entire rack. Now Chrysler is helping me out with the problem but If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times, no one sells the inner tie rod ends for a 00 4x4 Dodge Dakota by itself. If you know anyone who does let me know.
thank you
