Message: Hey DSW, I just replaced the left inner tierod end on my 2000 dak r/t with the part from rockauto. It does have inner tie rods and they are very easy to change. You have to remove the boot and the inner just unthreads from the shaft going into the rack. One bit of advice is not to forget to use the supplied threadlock compound like i did, and had to pull it apart again. Also its a good idea to replace both sides at the same time since the moog parts from rockauto are a little heavier duty. I only replaced the left side inner and now the right is starting to get some play, and i'll have to change it. Plus it'll save you from having to get it alligned a second time like i'll be doing.
Hope this helps

Message: I forgot to add one thing about the inner tierods. They have a fitting similar to a balljoint that is located inside the boot which is what allows the tierod to move up and down with the suspension. If they didn't have these inner tierods with these joints like some people on here seem to think the front susp wouldn't work to well.
Daddio if your so positive yours doesn't have these go out and crawl under your truck and squeeze that rubber boot . I guarantee you'll feel a round balljoint type fitting in there.

Message: Thanks Todd, I have been waiting for someone to reply about changing the inner tierods. Glad to hear that it's pretty easy. I am going to change both inner tie rods and the outer tie rods at the same time. I have been chasing loose front end components for about 2 years now and am getting tired of paying $60 for a front end alignment when I change components.
Upper ball joints and outer tie rods, 2 years ago - 1st alignment
Lower ball joints (and uppers for the hell of it), 8 months ago- 2nd alignment
Inner tie rods, now - 3rd alignment
It looks like one bad component will tear up another one that it's connected to, Bad upper ball joint will cause the lowers to go bad, bad outer tie rod will cause the inners to go bad, crappy vibrating warped rotors will cause everything to go bad
Dakup, I know my inner tie rod is bad since I have replaced everything that could cause the tire to seem loose (upper and lower ball joints, wheel bearing, outer tie rod) and while on jack stands the tire still has some wobble if the front of the tire is pulled and pushed hard, I can feel it coming from the inner tie rod. I can also hear some odd clunking noise on irregular pavement. Most of the things that I replaced were bad and probably caused the inner tie rod to go bad,,, either that or the 117K on the truck. LOL

Message: Your very welcome dsw. You'll be very happy with the inner tierods from rockauto their moog brand and they are about a 1/4 in bigger diameter balljoint than the crappy stock ones. Which had i known that when i ordered mine i would have gotten both sides, but only one of mine was bad and I didn't have the money at the time for both. The new left side inner being heavier duty seems to be adding wear to my stock right side inner so i'll have to change it soon. If you run into probs let me know and i'll try to help out anyway i can.

Message: Yeah I know what you mean by only one being bad at the time. When I replaced the upper ball joints and outer tie rods everything was OK for about 30K, then I replaced the lower ball joints cause they were loose and the uppers since everything was apart anyway. Then the wheel bearing hub nut backed off causing a loose wheel bearing (who knows it could have been loose when I did the lower ball joints) and I noticed the loose right inner tie rod while I was replacing the wheel bearing.
I guess the up side to the story is I will have all new suspension parts this year. Next month the bushings are probably going to go bad! LOL Don't know if I should upgrade them with urethane replacements along with the tie rods or wait until they are shot.
Upside to my sob story is these have been the olny problems with the truck. Everything else has been rock solid. If DC had spent a few extra bucks on the Dak suspension and brakes they would be bullet proof.

Message: Hey, boys, don't pay for an unnececary alignment.
Ball joints do not call for an alignment.
Most trucks, cars ,SUV's only have toe adj.
Some have camber adj.And even if you
have all adj's the new joints should put you
right back to spec. Trust the Midas touch.

Message: What are the symptoms of a bad tie rod. Here is the issue with my truck. Turning while doing parking lot manuvers it makes a loud clunk noise and the truck shifts over. Also does it will braking and going done the hwy sometimes.
I just bought moog ball joints. Because im almost 100% sure there the culprit. But could it be the tie rods also?

Message: YUP, the tie rods might be bad as these sound like the same symptoms I had after changing the ball joints. I realy noticed the problem driving on roads with an irregular surface, I could hear a weird rattle/popping noise as the tie rod vibrated around. Could also hear a noise as I braked going into a turn.
Jack up the right front of the truck and see if you can move the front of the tire by wiggling it realy hard (do the same for the left side), it shouldn't move and you shouldn't have play. If you have play it's the tie rods or the wheel bearing. I thought it was the wheel bearing since the nut had backed off mine causing play, but after replaceing the bearing and investigating further I found that the inner tie rod was also loose.
I had replaced the outer tie rods about 50K ago and everything was tight, then the inners went bad. If one tie rod is bad replace the other one, or all of them. Don't be cheap like the dealer and only replace the defective part, replace them all since the others are probably going to fail in a short period of time. Plus the Moog replacements are better than the OEM units. A complete set of 2k+ 2wd Dak inner and outer Moog tie rods from rockauto.com is about $140.

Message: I have a 01 club cab 4wd with 77K and it is experiencing steering problems. The symtom is an irregular feel in the steering wheel. When I turn I feel a resistance in the steering and then the wheel turns quickly and the result is a pretty choppy turn. It seems to happen at the same steering wheel rotation each time and it happens in both directions. This is the really confusing thing though, when the truck is just sitting there idleing I can turn the wheel until I feel the resistance and then try to hold it steady and the steering breaks into oscillation. I have checked the linkage before and after the hydralics and it all looks good and I have replaced the power steering fluid with fresh. I flushed the system and the old stuff looked pretty bad. It is brown in comparison to the new stuff which is clear. The power steering pump seems to be fine it doesn't make any noise, this leads me to believe that I am looking at a new rack and pinion. Does anyone have any suggestions for my problem or similar experiences. Thanks

Message: Hi;
I just bought an 01 4x4 4-dr with 4.7lV8 and 70kmiles. I also just found out that the rack&pinion has a bad leak and the lower (inner?) passenger side tie rod is very loose. I ordered rack&pinion from RockAuto remanufactured by Cardone A1 (part 22-349) but the tie-rods they sent me (Moog ES-3571) appear to be of a smaller diameter than the spindels (is that what you call them? - the threaded parts that come out of the rack/pinion). Can anyone tell me:
1) do these two reference numbers seem to match (RockAuto says so!##**&!@???) and why don't they fit AT ALL (there appears to be about 1mm =~ 1/16" difference in the diameter between the two)
2)is it not VERY unusual for a rack/pinion to develop a leak with so few miles and what might be a possible cause?
3) any other recommended upgrades/replacements while I'm in the process?
Thanks and many safe miles to all!
Nico

Message: Not sure if a '99 4 x 4 has a rack and pinion but if it does, there are no special tools needed. The ends just thread into the rack. The factory pieces have 2 flat sides so you can use an open end wrench. Or like I did, use a pipe wrench.
