Subject: Rear brakes IP: Logged
Message: I'm going to replace the brakes shoes on my '01 quad cab 4X4, but I've never worked on drum brakes before. I'm kinda new to working on vehicles, but I was able to change the pads and rotors on the front with instructions I found in this forum. Can anyone tell me what procedure I should follow? thanks.

Message: All drum brakes are pretty similar, with pins and springs holding the pads in place. You'll probably have to cut a clip off a wheel bolt to get the drum off, and it will probably take some persuading after that - beat on it if you have to. Do one side at a time so you can refer to the other side if you forget how something went. Adjust the pads to just contact the drum but not too tight before you put it back on. If you did ok with the front brakes, you'll probably do fine with the back - good luck.

Message: It's pretty simple. Remove the wheel and pull off the drum. You might have to convince it with a hammer. Look at the brakes carefully to remember where everything goes (connectors, spring and the adjuster, which is at the bottom. Remove the spring with a pair of pliers, and everything will pretty much fall off. I think the brake pads are the same, but compare your new ones to them to make sure you get them in the right spot. If you have any doubts when putting it back together, put the truck on jack stands and remove the other wheel and drum for reference. The last thing you will put on is the spring, and it is also the hardest part. Once you get them put back together and the wheels back on, back up and tap your brakes a few times and they will self-adjust.

Message: I have a 2000 Quad cab with ABS all the way around and the other day in stop and go traffic the back brakes locked up and the fronts did momentarily before releasing ( of course not giving me enough time to avoid the poor guy in front of me ) Brought it into the dealer who pronounced the brakes were fine ! I contested that and after chrysler sent out an investigator low and behold the front pads had only 2% left on them and were "caked in dust: while the rears had over 80% left and are fine supposedly . also a sensor for the rears was " in failure" Mind you they never squeaked , squealed or made any noise at all nor did the brake light ever come on...I tested it in a parking lot after and could get it to happen about every 10th time... same thing, rears locked up and fronts did nothing....long story short ,I had to pay for a front brake job but at least wasnt held at fault by my Insurance co. for the accident .....Drivers beware the brakes are sketchy on these things....

Message: I forget what they call the kit but you should get it. It contains new springs, retainers and what not that go on your rear brakes. It's only a few bucks and you really shouldn't reuse those parts. As for remembering where everything goes either look at the other side or draw a sketch. Biggest pain I've found is when the auto store gives you pads that are the wrong size for your truck. Just take your time. You should be able to do it in an hour.
