advising everyone to watch tomorrow night.

Mine are about to pop out. Ill be driving and the truck will just clunk and steering will throw me over about 6 inchs over in the lane. When i make parking lot maneuvers it freaks out passangers they think i slammed imto someone! Im just waiting to see if this special will maybe get us a recall.

If they're that bad is it worth the risk of injury to push it ? I'd use aftermarket greasable replacements and save the receipts if mine had any symptoms.

So we are left with the same ongoing investigation by NHTSA. I love the ratio they use to decide whether they give a damn to fix something or not.

Well since I'm a fellow West coaster let me try to help you out. One argument proposed by an interviewee was how many people have to die before Diamler Chrysler has to start worrying about its bottom line, or words to that effect. There was no actual equation given out but they talked about the ratio of complaints versus spending money to pay for all those bad parts out there. I can't remember if they mentioned Dakotas in the last story so it's nice to see us getting mentioned and shown in this story.

I got my Moog ball joints at rockauto.com all together with shipping $180. A shop installed them for me for $300 total. You could do them yourself if you have a grinder or chisel to break the old rivets off. You can tell if they are going bad, any shop can. Jack the tire up at the control arm, yank on the top of the tire if it deflects (there is a specific measurement and a tool to measure this) it's bad. On the story that aired today the wheel defelected alot, but even a little can be bad.

I am glad to see acknowledgement of this problem. My husband and I use to own a 2000 dakota quad cab.I don't recall exactly when we discovered the problem, but I do remember the cost to fix it was going to be approximately $2000.00. We originally thought it was a tire or brake or an alignment problem. Ours didn't squeek or clunk, ours shimmied so bad our watches on our arms (while driving) rattled. When we took it in to the dealer they told me that it was caused due to us not putting the original tires back on the truck when we replaced the tires. Putting original tires back on the truck did alleviate enough of the problem that we traded the dakota for another vechicle without taking a tremendous loss as was the situation when we tried to trade it in before returning the tires to original. For those who might believe it was due to oversize tires that was not the case. We only put cooper tires comparable to the originals on the truck, but goodyear is the only maker of the size of tire we needed and those tires were on back-order.

I saw that story this morning. I have just over 50K miles on my '99 Durango and have had the upper ball joints replaced twice. Luckily I took out that extended warranty on this vehicle. Between this and the list of other things I've had to get done I know I'll never buy another!

I guess I've been lucky. Nearly 50,000 miles and no problems with the ball joints, brake discs, or transmission. I keep checking, though.
