Subject: Front Hub Bearings 00 2wd IP: Logged
Message: Hey Guys, I noticed that the right front hub bearing is feeling a little loose. Not howling yet, but I can rock the tire a little and notice a weird rattle when going over bad pavement. Not the ball joints cause I just replaced them recently and everything else looks tight.
Looked up some old posts and it looks like the following bearings will fit the 2000 Dak 2wd non-front abs wheel hubs; Timken "Set 49", Carquest BCA513058, Pepboys FW115 or CRFW115. Has anyone pulled out the old bearings and installed new ones, or is this a machine shop job. I have pulled assemblys like this apart before by applying some heat, and then get them back together by heating the hub and freezing the bearing.
Where's the cheapest place to get the whole hub assembly online if I decide to replace the assembly? Guess the stealer would soak me for $200+, but I have heard that they are about $100 online. Checked out a couple of places I normally get stuff but they didn't list the hubs.
Thanks for the input, DSW

Message: Bump, I can't be the only one with a bad wheel bearing. F'n sealed bearings are as bad as the sealed ball joints.
Checked around and the bearings are $40-45 for the Timken's and $30-35 for the BCA's or CR's. Saw a post where someone did both sides, 4 bearings & pressing out/in for $100. Doesn't add up to me. Where did he get the bearings for $20?
Dodge wants $190 and Carquest wants $130 for the hub assembly.
Anything cheaper?

Message: Well, no one replied, but I thought I would shed some light on the subject since I replaced both front wheel bearings for $65. I found out that there is only one bearing in the front hubs, well it's 2 bearings in one race, only one part to replace.
Anyway, here's a rundown on the procedure if you want to remove and insert the bearings yourself. You can always have a machine shop press the bearings out and in, but it was another day and $40 for me, so I decided to replace them myself.
1- Buy the new bearings and stick them in the freezer for at least 4 hours, you can use the heat/freeze method to get these bearings in the hub.
2- Remove the big snap ring from the back side of the hub with big snap ring pliars, I used a set of thin needle nose pliars. Get the old bearings out by applying some heat to the hub (torch for 10 minutes) and then beating the bearing out with a 3# sledge and an old 1 7/8" hitch ball.
3- Clean up the hub and stick it in the oven at 300 degrees for about 30-45 minutes, Anything hotter than 350 degrees will cook the grease and seals.
WORK QUICKLY AND SWIFTLY IN THE NEXT STEP
4- Pull the HOT hub out of the oven and place it on a cutting board, get the FROZEN bearing out of the freezer and QUICKLY slide the bearing into the hub. It will drop right into place since there is about .004 clearance with the hub at 300 degrees and the bearing frozen. Hold the bearing down into the hub for about 30 seconds so the bearing is seated all the way into the hub. (YOU MUST get the bearing to drop into position immediately with one smooth motion. If it gets hung up 1/2 way down your skrewd) When the hub heats the bearing, the bearing will expand and be locked in the hub.
5- Put a fan on the hub to cool it down, replace the big snap ring, slide the hub on the spindle and then torque the hub nut to 185 ft lb. Dodge says to replace the spindle nut ($12) because the nylock part is only good for one use, I just put on some red locktite and called it good.
Hope this helps someone out since the hubs cost $190 Dodge and $130 Carquest. The bearing for these hubs is only $30, worst case $45.

Thanks for the information. I've copied and pasted it into my "what to do when sh!t goes bad on my truck" file. Luckily I haven't had to use it much but information like this can save a few bux down the road.
Again, thanks.

Message: Holy Crap, there is someone out there! LOL
The info I found on the front wheel hub bearings was realy spread out so I figured I would condense it and put in the procedure to get the bearings out and in since I didn't see it here.
Aw man, here I go talking to myself again.
