How simple is it to have the computer recalibrated to change the tire size, so the speedo will be correct?

Is it as simple as going to a compitent dealer and having the plug up and tell the computer the new tire size ?

I'm speaking on the experience of a friend here.

When my friend put 31" tires on his '99 Durango, the dealer was able to quickly reprogram his computer. However, the dealer told him that they could only reprogram to factory available configurations, i.e. gear swaps to different stock ratios, tire swaps to other stock sizes. They said that if he went with anything other than what was originally offered by Dodge they could get him close, but not completely correct.

thank you that is what I wanted to hear. I put 255/55/17's the same as the R/T. when I checked tire sizes the also offer a 255/60/16 on my truck and it is the same size ( diameter as the r/t tire.

thanks again !

Now if I can find a compitent dealer to do it fo me.

when my dealer did my speedo he said not all computers will take the new recalibration if the truck didnt come with that tire size already, and you still pay regardless. mine took but he has seen some that did not.

take the new calibration? sounds odd to me. its not like a heart transplant, their just swaping in a new constant.

Check Superlift's website ... www.superlift.com ... and look under the "new products" section. They've got a gadget to compensate for larger tires. Don't remember exactly what they call it.

I installed a TruSpeed from Superlift two weeks ago on my '99 CC 5.2 FT4X4. Goes in very easy and isn't too hard to calibrate (their instructions were way off - or I really screwed up the initial setting). I borrowed a friend's GPS to set the speed correctly. With my 33 BFGs I was really going 71 when the speedo read 60 (no wonder everyone else was driving so damn "slow"). Picked up 1.5 MPG on the overhead console - rolling along at 15.1 now.

I know in KM that if you go with 32x11.5-15 that you are going 6.5 km faster then the speedo says you are going. That is if you had 31x10.5-15 before.

Cool Tony! I was wondering if anyone had actually bought one of those yet. Where'd you get it? How much did it cost ya? I'm sure I'll be needing one when someone finally develops a lift for my rig.

Thanks

I got mine from http://www.rockymountainsusp.com and it ran $175 with Next Day Air shipping (I, of course, HAD to have it for the weekend - and I ordered it on a Thursday).
