Subject: 2002 Dakota Sport Suggestion on tire/rim IP: Logged
Message: I own a 2002 Sport with 15x7 rims. I have
235 75 15 tires on 15x7 rims that came with the truck, currently has 21k miles. I have the wheel flares and the small tires look alittle odd.
Do you suggest I go for the 16x8 rims and get some 245 70 16 tires or just get a bigger tire for my 15x7 rims. I was looking at a 265 75 15 Goodyear Wrangler tire, about 117 each. What do you guys suggest. Thanks. I like the look of the bigger tires on the 16 rim.
Would a bigger tire on my 15 rims give me that better look?

Message: What tires you choose depends on where you live, where you drive, and what you do with the truck the most. Tires have more effect on handeling and traction than anything else on the vehicle. SO choosing an off road tire for a truck that hauls cargo around the streets of Atlanta would not be a good idea. So before deciding on a tire, sit down and actually look at what most of your driving is.
As for what looks better, that's strictly up to you. Personally, I prefer the look of a big fat tire on a 15" rim. I don't like the performance, but I like the look.

Message: Lewis, as far as size is concerned, the 235/75/15 is approx. 29" in diameter. If you were to go to a 265/75/15 you would be running a 30.6" diameter tire - the same diameter as a 31/10.5/15. This would have the effect of negatively impacting acceleration and towing power, if that is important - in short, it would have the effect of changing your gear ratio - if you have 3.55's it would be like going to approx 3.25 gears, give or take. It would be a slug!! If you have 3.90's and not the standard 3.55, then going to a 30.6" tire is OK, under most conditions. If you want a slightly larger tire than you currently have - taller at approx 29.7, and wider, I would recommend a 265/70/15. They will fit on your stok rims. Suggest you stay away from Goodyear Wranglers; there are much better tires available. I would go with Bridgstone REVO, or Yokahama Geolander AT+II. To see how tire size affects gearing, etc, look at the calculators at Randy's Ring and Pinion. Also check out tire sites to compare tires and read reviews - sites such as, Tirerack.
Good luck.

Message: I just got Yokohama Geolander H/T-S G051's on my Dakota sport and I'm defintely impressed with them. Had Goodyears on it which were overpriced junk.
