My '00 Dak is making a screeching/chirping noise and it seems to be coming from under the middle of my truck. I took it to 2 different repair shops and got 2 different diagnosis. The first shop said the CV joint on the front driveshaft at the transfer case was bad and needed replacement. The second shop said the CV joints in the front axle shafts were bad and the entire axle assemblies would need to be replaced. Who's right?? I sure hope the first shop is right because they quoted me $125 out the door to fix it. The second shop said $500+ to fix it.

HELP, does anyone have any input?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

JW

I have had this before and now have it again. If you have been in deep muddy water the bearing in the Xfer case do not like it. I would tend to believe it is the output bearing at the Xfer case. I have been able to narrow it down by jacking up on side and spinning the tire to get the sqealing noise. I was able to trace it to the Xfer Case that way. I have also had the front drive shaft re-built to include greasable points to help prevent them from getting ruined.

I gotta learn to stay away from those muddy water holes but they are so much damn fun!

I had the same chirping noise (sounded like it was under the bed near the cab), but I had to have both of the rear universals changed and then it went away. I was able to tell that it was the universals because if I would coat them with wd-40, the noise would go away...
