Message: im planning on buying a 1992-96 Dakota...
im a horsepower nut and i would like to have a V8 but with gas milage and power what would be the best choice? im not going to be towing anything. i hear the V6 gets bad gas milage, but what do you think would be the best choice with power to gas ratio?? what do you think is the best?

Message: If your a horsepower nut...I say get a 5.9 Dak....gas mileage is comparable to the other V8's.
And I would say there are more mods to get more horsepower for the 5.9.
Just my 2 Cents...

Message: If your on a tight budget, stick to the 92-93 models. They have better exhaust manifolds and cams than the 94-96. They are a full second quicker.

Message: If you plan on doing a lot of towing, the get a v8. The v6 should get you about 18-20 mpg depending on engine condition. It is a good engine for the casual driver, but the ol' 3.9 is rather tame and i wouldn't recommend it for any serious towing applications.

Message: I say get a 94 or older 5.2L 5 speed that will proubly have the best gas milage / power. I get 15 mpg with my 99 4x4 cc my dad used to have a 92 3.9 2 wd cc auto and he got 22 mpg with 155,000 miles it had a 3" exaust stock I think it went pretty good for a 6cyl. I would personaly rather have a 5.2L 5 speed than a 5.9 auto but thats just my opinion.

Message: If you want stick, than you have to get a 94. But then you are not getting the best 5.2, which was in 92-93, unless you get headers as well. then they will flow better.

Message: nobody has told you that you will get the same mileage with a 6 or 8. the 8's are just faster, and sound better. get a 93 they are great i had 255'000 on it when i sold it, and no problems other than water pump. fast, dependable, looks are lacking quite a bit, but the performance makes up for it. plus a 93 will cost u less than a 96 that is slower. Cheaper, and faster, and looks the same= good deal for a reference, I got 16 mpg with my 93 cc on tyhe highway, but only around 11 in the city( mostly wide open in the city though. it had 3.55 gears.

Message: my 99 4x4 cc 5.2L 5 speed with 3.55 gears ran a 15.6 @92 mph stock with alot of wheelspin the guy in the cc R/T next to me was pissed because I beat him but not by alot his was pretty modded too. I would still get a 5 speed even if you have to get a 94 I can just imagine how well a 2wd short bed would go since my 4x4 cc goes like it does. I was getting 15mpg all the time before my pleanum gasket went south I'm porting a kegger right now to fix the problem. I have 96,000 miles on mine and the only problems have been the waterpump pleanum gasket and a upper balljiont.
