Subject: Brake line LEAK at control arm! GenIII IP: Logged
Message: A warning for GenIII owners with lowered front suspension. Check the factory left upper control arm for impact with the the left side metal brake line. I have AIM 3" drop lower control arms with factory springs and shocks. After 60,000 miles on the setup, the front corner of the control arm wore a hole in the line, causing a brake fluid leak. The impact was dead center of the line, and there was only about 1/64th inch clearance between the line and control arm. Easy prevention would have been to tweek the line toward the center of the vehicle away from the control arm, but I never noticed it until too late. I was fortunate enough to be at the dealer one hour before a factory rep arrived. He took a look at it, and approved a line repair with a small deductible. The biggest problem is finding the line itself,(fortunately, the short one) only available nationally. I found one instance on dd.com of a 4x4 owner with a similar problem. Check the clearance on your brake lines, and save yourselves a lot of trouble, guys and gals.

Message: Repair done, all is well. Brakes had to be bled of fluid to get the air out. One other thing; the dealer had to reorder the brake line because the first one was for 4-wheel ABS, my Dak had rear-only ABS. The difference is the 4-ABS line is shorter, and the 2-ABS line has an extra 90 degree bend on one end. The tech bent an extra little kink to the right at the control arm area to prevent future problems.

Message: Hey, fastdak! Any new mods to the Motorsports lately? Alloy homebrew intake and R/T 17x9's w/Michelin LTX 255/55/17 were last year's mods. I've got the 16x8's w/Eagle #1's in storage. I had the dealer flash the speedometer for a 28" tire from the stock 29". It raised the hwy. rpm a bit. Feels like a 4.00 to 1 gear now. I lost about 1/2 mpg, but the baby will fly.

Message: Magnaflow makes cat. converters now? I had a Catco on my '92 that worked well. Are you running your Eagle #1's, or something else at the strip? After having both 28" and 29", tire diameter doesn't seem to handicap the launch/speed of our trucks. Little stiffer sidewalls on the Michelins, though.

Message: Busy week here, too. I've got a Flowmaster 70 with 2 1/2" duals with R/T-style side exit, from the cat back. A muffler shop did the bends. If you get a custom setup, consider a "L" bracket to slightly push the spare tire away from the left side pipe. Also, run the pipe behind the rear end, not over it. Duals are way worth the effort. I did mine before the homebrew air intake, which really brought the 4.7 alive. Good air in/ good air out; works every time.
