Subject: HELP! NOISE IS DRIVING ME INSANE!!! IP: Logged
Message: Ok here is my problem whenever i am stopping at a red light or something i hear this series of dull knocks followed by one resounding knock right before i come to a complete stop. This happens after the tranny has shifted all of the way down to first gear but not directly after. It seems to be coming from either the driver side front or rear wheelwell but i could be wrong. It is driving me insane not to mention i think something could be wrong with my truck. Any ideas? Please any help would be great. Thanks guys.

Message: Could be a bent brake caliper but you would hear that more on turns or the cv shaft again only on turns or it could be your transmission loosing synchronization causing gears to make noise.

Message: Oh and by the way the noise just started today after we had gotten a serious rain and someone in a previous post said something about their brake calipers making a similar noise in the rain i don't know if this is a possibility but i figured it was worth a shot.

Message: I have heard of that before. It maybe the brakes, but it sounds to me like the rear transmission mount is loose or the rubber isolator has gotten real soft and is allowing the tail housing to bounce around. I don't know, it should also do it when it upshifts if that was the problem. You said it does it mostly when it downshifts into first. It just sounds like a drivetrain problem and not a brake problem. The break caliper clang makes a sound almost like a hammer hitting the wheel hub. The thud your describing sounds more like an engine mount or a rear tailhousing mount.

Message: yeah but it does not really do it WHEN it downshifts. It does it after it downshifts like right before i come to a complete stop so there really should be no abnormal torquing on the mounts at that time???

Message: Hello pull off the calipers or swing them up depending on the set up you have, and check for any kind of glazing or discoloring on the rotor, also check for glazing on the pads if you find any of thies know might be a good time to think about raybestos and get rid of that stock garbage. Two more things, one beware of the stock spindle horn this is made of cast iron and the bolts that hold the caliper in are steel and when removing the caliper bols they tend to destroy the threads in the spindle horn. The other thing to consider is the fact that when the brakes shudder like this the ABS is trying to compinsate for the intermittent lock up.

Message: In response to your first question I own a 2002 Dodge RAM 1500 4x4 4.7L 5-45RFE w/ NP231 transfer case. LSD rear. Slowly being decked out in bright tread aluminum otherwise stock. I also work on a 92 ford taurus(wifes car), 1992 Subaru legacy(old car being sold to 5th step-mother), 89 taurus (long since donated to charity), 843 Ingersol rand bobcat skid-steer loader, 2500DT dual clutch kubota tractor, and whatever else sits in the yard my family has to work on.
In response to your second question a bad u-joint will make constant noise at highway speeds, cause severe vibrations at speeds over 20mph, show fluid leakage around the entire assembly, possibly have play by itself. If it is a ball joint you would hear either crunching popping like a knee popping only with metal when flexing the suspension. If it is a motor or transmission mount it will jerk you as you stop and test for that is to open hood and have someone look as you shift gears and if it moves it could be a mount motor or otherwise.
