Subject: Advice needed: Theft recovery dakota IP: Logged
Message: I am considering purchasing a theft recovered '03 quad cab. No damage except the theives apparently tried to unhook odometer. Truck obviously has low miles and the digital odometer is stuck at 32,001. It runs and drives fine but the dash and the gages arent working correctly. Anyone know how the digital dash works or any possible ideas what could be wrong?

Message: Thanks will do....
A few more details...Checked on the truck again today and found the odometer is reading "NO BUS" and apparently will flash the mileage 32,001 while driving. The dummy lights are lit up but the speedometer and tach and gauges don't work. I dont think the headlights come on either. Dealer stated he checked the fuses and all looked good. Not sure if the dash is just unplugged or if it could be fixed and reprogrammed.
Talked to a Dodge service rep and the "BUS" is the communication lines between the computers but without seeing the vehicle he cant say anything for sure.
Any help is greatly appreciated....thanks

Message: Why is this necessarily related to the theft? Is there damage to the steering column? Did they try to "hot wire" it under the dash?
Could this problem be something completely unrelated to the theft?

Message: It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the fact its a theft recovery. But it does seem like too much of a coincidence. Who knows, it could have been someone trying to fraud the mileage, hard to tell. There doesn't seem to be any damage to the steering column at all.
I did buy the truck. Half book value is far too good of a deal to pass up.
Will update on what the dodge dealership says tomorrow.
Thanks for the help

Message: Update: Now an ongoing saga....
Yesterday, Dealer replaces TCM and lights and locks, etc. now working but cluster is still dead. Dealer now quotes $850 for cluster and TCM install.
Today, after waiting all day for dealer to get to my truck with cluster in hand, he calls back and states new cluster worked for 10 minutes and then shorted out again. These guys are freakin killin me!!!
