Subject: Cleanin my engine and underbody IP: Logged
Message: I want to do some heavy duty cleaning on my underbody and engine bay. It's lookin pretty nasty. What is the best cleaning agent to use? Also, I know that I'm gonna have to cover some stuff to keep water from getting in. What do i have to cover, and what are some good tips/tricks to know? I wanna get an undercoating done, and i have a lift at school that i can use to prep it, but i can't powerwash it there.

Message: I use Simple Green on my engines but also I have never let them get dirty. I wash the engine and bay each time I go to the car wash. Use common sense and watch the fuse box, it is not sealed.

Message: Yeah, I have powerwashed it a couple times. The guy who owned the truck before me didnt know what clean was. Thanks for the tip about the fuse box. I probably woulda forgot about that. How strong is the degreasing quality of Simple Green. I hear it's pretty good stuff.

Message: When I was working for the dealer all of our detailers used simple green for cleaning the engine bays. If I had something with a bad oil leak I'd use some auto/marine cleaner Its some really strong stuff but WATCH YOUR EYES!
If you buy the simple green, find a gallon jug of it. usually that'll only run ya 10-12 bucks. a 14 oz squirtbottle goes for around $7.00 here in wi.

Message: I have used simple green in the past, but have found that Castrol Super Clean works even a little better and faster. Not only do you need to cover the items listed in previous posts, but also do not let this stuff get on your paint. I usually rinse everything around the engine bay every minute or so just to be sure none of it dries on the body. Both are also great at getting brake dust off too. One word of caution, do not under any circumstances let either dry on anytning or it will permanantly ruin the finish. Try not to get it on your hands either and wear eye protection. These products are very caustic.

Message: I use "Gunk - Foamy Engine Brite". It works great, spray it all over your engine compartment (cover the important stuff), wait 5 min spray off with low pressure. Engine looks brand new!! I recommend after doing this using some Armor All on the hoses and any other rubber. This stuff can dry them out and shorten the life span of the hoses.

Message: When you are done a leaf blower works well for drying the truck and the electrical under the hood. Also, I would try to amore all the rubber hoses. The cleaners tend to dry them out.Like Marine Tanker stated.

Message: Now add a twist. My second truck is a Sports Car (5" off the Ground). Drove 5000 miles with a bad rear main seal(1-2 Qts. every tank). So thats 10 or 20 Quarts of oil on my underside. Engine is pulled for replacement and some mods. Car is at home for work, No lift at home, but, How do I clean the bottom?
1) My Environut Neighbor would call the EPA on me if I did it in my driveway.
2) 5" off the ground! I could have it flat bedded, but can't find anybody to clean it
How do I clean the bottom prior to install of engine, trans, new exhaust, rear end?
Who's really clever?

Message: I use Simple Green for everything.
Greased Lightning is a powerful cleaner, but it is caustic, so you can't use it on paint.
I used Greased Lightning to clean my intake manifold and plenum plate.

So is mine. Sprung an oil leak and made a huge mess.
Get the front way up on jack stands. Get under it with a creeper, and spray with simple green. Let sit for a while, and rinse off with hot water.
That purple stuff from Castrol works better than simple green. But it can stain aluminum. It's also more irritating to the eyes and throat, so be carefull.
I have also used foamy engine bright in the past, and that works pretty good, too.
