Subject: 04 vs 03 4.7L Engine IP: Logged
Message: OK, I realize this may be stupid but I'm asking anyway. My '03 SLT+ Quad cab 4x4 with a 4.7L/auto and 3.55's was at the dealer for routine stuff. They gave me an Enterprize Rent-a-Car '04 Club cab 4x2 with a 4.7L engine and 3.55's.
The '04 performed NOTICABLY better than my truck. Faster take off, more power from 55-60, all round better performance, and not just a tiny bit.
I realize that the CC is lots lighter than my QC, and I realize that the 4x2 is lighter than my 4x4, but man, it almost seemed as if it had to be more than that. My 03 (built in May 03 and the 04 was built in 11/03) has the plastic square throttle body cover that says 4.7L Magnum whereas the 04 had a smaller round plastic cover that said 4.7L Magnum, but other than that everything appeared the same.
Sooo... Is there any performance difference between the two or do you guys thing that the ligher weight and 4x2 really made THAT huge of a difference?
Like I said, stupid question, but I wondered what you guys thought..

Message: I'll bet the 4x2 CC with 2wd is alot lighter then the 4x4 Quad cab. Since reducing the vehicle weight has the same effect as increasing horsepower, its common sense that it will be faster.
I have an 02 reg. cab. with 2wd, a 4.7 V8, 5sp, and 3.55 lsd, its really quick. Lots fun fun. There are many things that are faster, but they all cost a whole lot more $$$$$

Message: I wouldn't be surprised if there was as much as a 4-500 pound weight difference between the two trucks.

Message: More rotational weight, and more total weight on the QC, 4x4. The cab, and the drive train!
I think my QC 4x2, does pretty well, with sme minor mods.

Message: It's just that the cc rental was way ligter. I have an '01 4.7 auto w/3.55's - My friend had an '01 QC 4x4 4.7 auto w/3.55's - basically the same situation as you,,just different years.
But, I could pull away from him like he was standing still in mine,,and he had done exhaust and intake by the time I got mine (stock). It's definitely the weight,,plus the fact that you're lower to the ground gives the illusion of going faster - plus I'm sure that one handles better too.

Message: According to www.dodge.com, the CC 4x2 weighs 3990-4035 lbs., the QC 4x4 4460-4500. A major performance-killing 470 pound difference.

Message: The 4x4 drive train is a little less efficient than the 4x2 also.

Message: Like everyone else...it's the weight!
My 01' Quad Cab 2WD w/4.7/auto/3:55's LSD is much more responsive than my wife's 00' Durango 4X4 w/5.9/auto/3:55's LSD. Four wheel drive adds about 500lbs. And there is a weight penalty with the older 5.9L as is the case with my wife's Durango. Gas mileage sucks on both V8's however!

Message: Thanks guys. It makes sense, I just didn't expect it to be THAT big of a difference. I wouldn't give up my 4 doors or my 4x4, but I must admit it was fun driving the cc 2wd model! It being a rental was that much better because I didn't mind beating on the floorboard with the gas pedal a little bit!

Message: One thing to note about responsiveness etc. In the colder months tire pressures should be checked. When pressures are checked in the warm weather and then in the cold, you might notice up to a 6 or 8 lb difference. If you keep your tires at 32lb in warm weather, try lowering them to 24 and see what a drop in performance you get. The same thing happens in the winter compliments of mother nature. Just check them after a good highway drive to make sure you are not too high. And remember to lower them when the weather is warm. I keep my air compressor hook-up close by and adjust my air pressure anytime the weather is changing.

Message: As a way to determine how much air to put. I know my "cold" tire pressures as well as "warm". If I stop at a rest area or service area on the highway, I check my pressure as soon as I get out of the vehicle. Doing the same in different weather, I see the difference, and adjust my "cold" pressure accordingly. So, it depends on what type of driving you do, as to how much air to put in when "cold" means winter cold.
