 Subject: 4.7 qc vs. v8 tundra

My brother just bought a v-8 Tundra access cab, and other than my quad having a bigger rear seat, why am I smarter than him? Cost and equipment basically identical after rebates, etc. Just a bit of sibling rivalry here.

NO flames, I called it as I saw it...
so, I was gonna write something trite about wrecks, but it was to crude.
QC better points is: more room and better performance in a boy racer kind of way, and better looks. Seems you knew those though.
Toy is: Safer, bigger bed, better resale, more reliable, quieter.
I NEED the room in the rear cab, so I'm thinking QC or 150 SC. If I didn't I'd buy the tundra without hesitation over anything else made.

The Dakota does look better than the Tundra but I think the performance would be pretty close. The 0-60 on the 2wd Access Cab is around 8.0 sec. The 2WD QC 4.7 couldn't be much faster than than that. Especially with the auto. If I didn't just love Dodge I would to take a Tundra over anything. They are definitly the safest truck on the road and Toyota is very reliable.

I realy wanted a Toyota but I could not afford one. When I got my 2001 Dodge Dakota QC Toyota wanted 2-4 thousand more in my area for a QC Toyota Taccoma or an access cab Tundra and the interst rate was 5 points higher. I will say that the brakes and handeling are not as good as the Toyota's. The finish is not as good either but for the money I saved up front and in fianaceing I am sure I will be happy in the long run as long as this dodge lasts as long as all of my Toyotas have.

The inside of the QC seems more plush to me also. The QC feels smaller when driving them in traffic, and it of course looks way cooler! Drive both and you will notice the difference in the details. The Tundra is much quieter too.

I haven't looked to closely but am pretty sure the Dak QC is a lot faster just because it probably weighs a lot less. I bet the Toy is made a lot better becasue they use robots and not hammers and chisles like DC does. DC did great job with the styling and running gear but is severly lacking in the fine details. My paint job is shit and needs some sanding and repainting on the driver side door. Mind you it was custom ordered and taken of the lot before they could do any touch ups but it's still no the greatest quality anyways.

Agreed Art. She would probably be a cougar hanging out at the bar like a hoping for some poor SOB that had a few to many to realize what the f.... he just got himself into. Dak wins on looks big time IMHO.

Yeah, the Dak is much better looking (the Toyota doesn't look like anything in particular), and the interior seems cozier. Hopefully mine will stay reliable and I'll have the last laugh. If that Tundra had a real back seat, I think I'd be leaning that way, but as it stands, I'll stick with what I've got. Oh, the don't offer an lsd. That's a deal breaker too.

No LSD in the Tundra? I have owned 2 1WD trucks before this and since getting LSD I will never be without it.
1 black strip just don't look good if you know what I mean. He he he. Just kidding. (Actually I am not) Without LSD I would spin the tires in the rain in my big 4x4 Dak no matter how gentle I was on the gas. Starting on a hill in the rain I needed 4x4 engaged just to get moving. The LSD shouldn't even be an option at all on truck because they are so light in the ass end. It's a nessecity IMHO.

The best line that I've heard regarding this comparison by an automobile journalist went something like this.
"The tundra is the truck for guys who have have only ever owned cars and want a truck that feels like a car. The Dakota is for real truck owners who regularly use there trucks and will be glad to give up some refinement for greater ability and better looks.

Well, you bought the better looking truck.
Your brother's truck, however, will probably last him as long as it takes for you to go through 2 or 3 Dakotas. When he finally does decide that he wants something else, he'll get a higher percentage of his purchase price back. Also, you would think that the Dakota should be quicker, but I recall being disappointed when I read 0-60 and 1/4 mile times were better for the Tundra. Sure, you can modify your Dakota, but your brother can hae Toyota install a supercarger and it will not affect his factory warranty.
I am a Dakota owner myself, and if I had it to do over, I would have looked elsewhere. In fact, knowing what I know now, it probably would have been a Tundra.

Refinement? Does Toyota offer LSD, AWD, handling pkg, 1800 lb bed capacity, or even a standard bed truck with a v-8. They only weigh 400 lbs more than a Dakota and that's just dead weight. They also cost about $4000 more. For that you can get a Ram, Silverado, F150 or the new Titan any of which is a real fullsize truck. My 4.7 AWD, LSD will haul more tow as much or more and run any rode course better than the Tundra. You boys keep tooling around town with the girls. I use my truck.

WRT green gobbler's line about 2-3 daks for every Tundra. I have not seen a 45 year old toyota product any where in Canada. Not that Daks will outlast Tundras but he's exaggerating .
The rust from salty winter roads up here kills vehicles long before 20 years is up, so a company saying their products lasts forever is blowing smoke.

Ok Hammer, maybe it is a slight exaggeration to say that a Tundra will DEFINITELY last as long as 2 or 3 Dakotas, but it is completely possible. It isn't uncommon at all to see a Toyota 4x4 for sale that has over 200k miles on it, and it sells! I couldn't believe it until I saw proof. I think its pretty safe to say that it isn't uncommon to see a Toyota go 240k miles (I'm not saying that's the average, but it wouldn't be hard to find examples of this). Divide this by 3 Dakotas, that allows 80k miles each before major mechanical failure. Mine went a little over 50k before it had major issues (in addition to the small issues).
Just looking at the numbers, it is entirely possible to be on a 3rd Dakota before the Toyota gives you a major problem.
A couple of years ago, Toyota was a bad word to me. My Dakota has taught me the virtues of longevity. I'd rather spend my money on toys than fixing the vehicle that is supposed to haul them.
