Subject: Dakota 4WD problem

Message:
I have a 97 dakota Club Cab V6 239 4WD manual transmission.

Out of the blue, I started having trouble with my 4WD. If I am going at about 10 mph and I make a right turn, the right front tire binds up really bad to the point in will actually stop the truck. The right front tire will actually skid a little. This will also happen when I am just coasting with the clutch pushed all the way down(wheels should be free spinning). When I am going straight, it is fine, but when I turn the wheels to the right is when this occurs.

I never use the 4WD on dry pavement and it just started happening all of a sudden. Anyone ever have a similar problem or an idea as to what is causing this?

Thanks,
Dave

For part time 4x4, this is normal. That's why the owners manual tells you not to use it on dry pavement. The same thing happens in snow/dirt, but you just don't notice it as much.

Why did it start happening all of a sudden? I have over 140K miles and I just noticed it at about 100K? It's not something I could have missed.

Just wondering, if it started clicking prior to locking up?

If, you heard a clicking noise every time you turned right or left, it could very well be your outer CV joint.

Now, if you turned left without any problems, I would put money on the cv joint. Because, if it was the diff, it wouldn't matter if you turned right or left.

Another think, make sure your brake line is not kinked. Turn your wheel to the right and take a look at the brake line.

to check your diff, jack the car up and rotate one of your front tires, the other one should rotate the opposite direction.
