Subject: engine quitting / failing to start IP: Logged
Message: Searching for assistance for problem of engine quitting/failing to start.
'92 Dakota with V6, automatic transmission, 85,000+ miles.
I have experienced numerous incidents of the engine quiting. No loss of performance or sputtering as if running out of fuel. Engine running then not running. Problem doesn't occur everytime the truck is operated.
At first, engine quit while driving, but it would restart. Problem continued, but engine would not restart even with numerous attempts or allowing it to sit for hours. Engine has failed to start after being parked all day. Allowing it to sit overnight, it did start the next morning.
I have had it towed to a Dodge dealership twice afterhours when the engine failed. And each time it has started for them the next morning on their first attempt. The dealership tells me the Fuel system is good, with correct pressure. Also the Electrical system is good with no fault codes from the computer, no corrosion. The dealership's lead mechanic connected a 'buddy' computer and found no faults.
The dealership has been unable to experience any engine quitting problem. The dealership suspects that the problem lies in the vehicle's computer or wiring apparatus leading to the computer. But because of the expensive cost of these parts, recommend that I drive the vehicle until the engine quits and will not restart at all.
What do you recommend?

Message: Inspect the wiring harness coming out of the power relay box on the left side of the engine bay. You will have to remove the shielding tape, and about 8" down on the wire harness you should see a wire splice. You need to remove the plastic cover to inspect the splice. Go to the DML web site, and click on the FAQ. It gives detailed instructions on what to look for and how to repair the wire. This is a common problem on Gen II Daks. Hope this helps you out.

Message: Kevin, Thanks for replying. The instructions and the DML web site were very informative and helpful. I was able to find the splice but it was solid and corrosion free. I even checked a more exposed splice in the same vicinity and it was also solid, corrosion free.
Any other ideas?
Many Thanks, Rich M.
