Subject: Pinging now...

Starting a few days ago, my 3.9 v6 is pinging when I going up a hill. I think it started with my last tank of gas. It has not done this before. Could I have gotten some bad gas? I fond it wierd that it started a few hours after filling up, BTW I had never used that filling station before? I wonder if they put the wrong octaine in their system, gave my 85 instead of 87? I think im going to run this tank of gas out and fill up with 91 octaine from the place I normally goto and see if it goes away.

Any other suggestions?

I have a 97' Dakota with the 3.9L V6 and mine pinged for a little while. The way I fixed it was to put the Autolite 3923 spark plugs in, with MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor wires with a Borg Warner Cap and Rotor. No pings for 1000 miles, so far so good.

The higher octane gas usually helps too, but I use 87 octane and no pings after the mods.

Hope this helps.

A mild pinging going up hills is nothing to worry about as long as it isn't a heavy constant knock. Most manuals from the manufacturers address this condition. If it bothers you then avoid that gas station or switch to 89 octane and see how it works then if it still happens try premium fuel. The odds are that you got a tankful of lesser quality regular than you usually do. No biggie. I had a four banger years ago that pinged on hills no matter how high the octane was that you put in it.

I guess you could try a 50/50 mix of 87 and 91 and make your own mid-grade if you want.
