Message: Kevin, I like the Westin Safari Bar on your Dakota. Since I don't have the fog lights on mine, I was considering one of those but have a few Q's.
According to JC Whitney catalog, there is no drilling, etc and it mounts to factory holes, just want to confirm. Also, do you have to trim any of the lower valance? JC Whitney does not mention ordering the mounting brackets separately but Advanced Auto has then listed separately? How did you get yours.
Finally, lighting. Are your KC Daylighters stainless or chrome. Last chrome pair I had (on a 94 Z-71, I was ignorant back then) rusted. I was thinking of Hella 500s.

Message: Mine came with the mounting kit included, but I know that some places sell the bar and kit seperately. Gotta watch out for some of these places! The safari bar mounts on a bracket with slotted holes that you slide between the bumper and the bumper mounts, so no drilling. It slides in from the back side, so I'm thinking if I would "bump" anything with it that it would pop out. It doesn't do a very good job of protecting the lights either. The KC Daylighters (oh yeah, they are the stainless ones) would be toast if anyone thumped into my front end in a parking lot or something. The KC's stick out beyond the bar in front a bit. A smaller bodied light that sat all inside the safari bar would probably survive.
All in all, the safari bar looks good, but I don't think it'll hold up well off road. After talking to Westin about their "slotted bracket" design and voicing my concern with it, they told me the safari bar was basically designed for SUV leasers .... they can have the "look" without modifying the vehicle at all.

Message: You may want to consider the KC Titanium slim lights. They don't stick out as much as the normal lights do, and they seem to work just as well. But I do agree with Kevin about it not being very sturdy. I am probably going to replace mine in around Christmas (a gift to my truck) with a new push bar or something.

Message: The Hella 500s are slim, I'm just looking for a place to mount lights. It might be sturdier if you tack welded the brackets once intsalled.
Chris, you going to sell your Safari Bar?
