Message: umm the 4.7 is a V8, unless you meant the 3.7 which is the V6? Anyway, its really up to you what type of transmission you want. A few things to think about are what type of driving will you be doing? A lot of stop and go, or highway. Also if performance is an issue for you I would recommend the manual, the 4.7's with 3.92's and a manual have been known to sometimes beat the RT's from an acceleration standpoint. For me, I go with the manual, they are just so much more fun to drive, and it helps me stay aware of whats going on.

Message: The 3.7 doesn't make a lot of power. It's pretty good for a V6, but certainly less than the V8. Unless you live in the city, I'd go for the 5 speed. It weighs about 100 pounds less than the auto, and uses less power to run. If Dodge matched the 5 speed stick to the 5.9, I would have a stick in mine.

Message: I prefer the manual myself, I think its more fun to drive, gives you more control and in general better mileage, but you have a clutch that will need to be replaced at sometime. It has fewer parts and is less complex an auto. If you ever had to replace it getting a good rebuilt manual should be easy and auto...I've never see a rebuilt that wasn't anything but junk.
Go with the 4.7 V8. It will get better mileage than the v6 and the extra power is worth it.
This goes double if you get a 4X4. You should be able to find a good low mileage V6 Quad Cab
at a reasonable price. I know of several that were traded in for V8's

Tom Hon, I do not understand how come a 4.7 V8 will get better mileage than a V6. I was looking around and it said a V6 is 16/22 and a V8 was 15/20 City/Hightway. What did you mean??

Message: he meant about the real world numbers. I get about 17/21 out of my 4.7 CC manual 3.55. I am willing to bet that the 3.7 gets about the same mpg so why not upgrade for 562(what mine cost me) bucks? I don't think that for 562 there is an aftermarket part that can give you that kind of hp and tq increase that a v8 can.

Message: The 3.9, had about the same or worse MPG as the 4.7, especailly pushing the QC.
NOt too sure about the 3.7, it's rated much more HP though, probaby better MPG than the ol 3.9.
Unless there's a reason not to, go with the 4.7, and my vote, is a 5spd manual, (like mine).
However, if you go with the 3.7, as said, the 5spd manual would probably be better overall.
I only have a 5spd manual. Don't listen to people that say they're no good in traffic, either rhey don't have one, or just plain don't enjoy shifting their own gears! Here in the Houston area, traffic is no problem for me, with mine.

Message: Quad cabs weigh over 4000 pounds. You better believe that the 4.7 would get better mileage than a 3.7 in that application. Is the 3.7 even offered on Quad cab?

Message: The gas mileage is more dependent on weight, air drag, rolling resistance, drive train friction and driving habits than engine size.
I had a Mazda MPV 4WD minivan. 16MPG with a 3.0L V6. The large frontal area, heavy due to more glass/metal in van format, automatic transmission with teh torque converter slip, 4WD drive train with extra weight and friction. The 3.0L V6 would rev to 4200RPM up the grades here in the foothills of the Sierras.
My 2WD Quad Cab w/ 4.7L V8, 5-spd manual gets consistently 19MPG in foothills and 23MPG on the level.

Message: I prefer to row my own. I have the 5 speed in my quad, I also went for the v8 after looking at the GPA est. yes the 3.9 is a good motor, had it in my 88 dak, but the quad really needs that v8.

Message: Let me add a bit to my previous post.
One of the guys at work and I both bought '01 4X4 quad cabs. The trucks were identical except he got the 3.9 V6 with the auto transmission and I got the 4.7 V8 with the 5 speed. He was getting 13 mpg and I am getting in the mid 18's in mixed
driving. After 9 months he traded it in and got the 4.7 V8. We've got a few good hills around here, 6 miles of 7% grade, I don't want to do that with a V6. It's nice to have the power to
pass that Semi that's trying to get up the hill at 40 mph.

Message: Hey Yogi,
I've had the following:
98 v6 5 speed 4x4
99 5.2 v8 auto 4x4
00 5.9 R/T
03 2wd 4.7 5-speed (turbo)
The 4.7 5-speed gets the best mileage, hands down. I thrash the crapola out of it, and even with the turbo, I get 16-17mpg city.
The 98 with the v6 and 5-speed was the biggest slug, 2nd worst gas mileage only behind the R/T. The 99 5.2 even with the auto got better mileage than the v6, I guess it didn't have to work as hard. Of course, there are all kinds of variables like gearing, driving habits, 2wd or 4x4, RC, CC, or QC, etc. But, you will be satisfied with the 4.7 v8, and I think you'd probably be disappointed in the 3.7 v6.
