How much difference in towing would changing the gearing in the rear end of my 98 5.2 Dakota. Anyone ever done it.

It's the most bang for the buck in applying power to the pavement. A bigger spread in the change gets you more improvement for the same money. To a point. What gear you choose depends on how much you are hauling, how often, where you tow, and what transmission you have. But generally speaking, I find a 3.55 to 3.92 gear to be a good all around choice.

Of course, if you daily tow a 7,000# trailer across the continental divide, then maybe 4.56 might be better ;)
