I was out ice fishing with a couple of buddies this weekend and noticed while trying to get unstuck (2wd, ls-differencial) that my left wheel doesn't always spin. My right tire was going like a mad man, but the left would spin a little then stop. Is my limited slip clutch going bad? It used to spin both tires. The good news is that I was driving a 2wd truck through 18+" of snow in the middle of a lake with no plowed roads or any other tracks save the random snowmobile track. Granted I had to have about 700 pounds of weight in the back!

A little over 65,000. As I was trying to get moving I would look outside the door at the back left tire and it would spin a little, then stop like it was getting traction, but I sure wasn't going anywhere! I would have thought the limited slip differential would have put a little more power to that wheel-instead it looked like it was hardely getting any power at all.

I dont think there are clutches in the sure grip differentials,,,mine has about the same miles on it but they both spin. Not to sound like a jerk, but are you sure that you have a sure grip or an open one-legger? I think the only thing sure grips have are springs and pressure plates like the 8 3/4 Auburn units have.

Nope, it says limited slip differencial on the tag in the glove box. Mine spins on gravel and tar, but it didn't on the snow/ice.

You have a clutch pack on either side. They wear out.

any LSD is only good for about 60% torque transmission. Not overly impressive. Get a locker if you need more.

Nope's correct - clutch packs - probably fried'm. They're replaceable though. The stock lsd is a Dana Trac-lok.

Ok, so let me ask this. If I fried my clutch pack, what would be my best bet for fixing this? I want something that will help me in snow/ice driving since I live in minnesota and encounter snow & ice most of the year;-) Would I be better to replace the clutch packs and go back to limited slip, get an engagable locker, or just leave it with one wheel being able to drive. Any before you mention it, getting a 4x4 is not an option at this time.
