Message: I'm in the middle of installing a new t-stat and a back flush T. I have been informed the bottom heater line is the one to put the T in...but my question is: What direction is the water normally flowing? I have worked on many V-8, all of them had t-stats on top of the engine and heater hoses directly into the block or water pump. This 4.7 L is a bit confusing..? The t-stat on the bottom? What? Does the water start at the pump, go thru the engine, heater, then t-stat, rad and back to pump?

Message: The very top big hose flows hot coolant into the rad. Through the rad, out into the bottom big hose. Through the t-stat and up into the pump. Out the pump into the base of the block, split for each bank of cylinders. Up the banks and into the heads and back to the beginning.
Now for the heater, on the left bank (passenger side) there's a bypass so when the t-stat is closed the coolant still flows. The heater core loops from this bypass.

Message: So I drew a schematic of the above answer, pretty close to what I had though...the only problem is if I put a back flush T on the lower heater hose, following the schematic, the backwards flow doesn't go thru the rad. It comes out the rad cap before going thru. Is this correct? The lower 'return' line from the heater is on the block side of the t-stat, right, so when I apply cold water for the back flush and the t-stat is closed it seems that the water will flow the normal direction, not backwards?

Message: DrD.,
Sorry for the lag.
I would pop the other hearter hose off and flush the core first. Then pop the upper big hose off, remove the t-stat and flush the block, then flush the rad. You want to avoid flushing gunk from the heater core into the rad 'cause it could get stuck there and plug it up.
