what would cause rear drum brakes to systematicly work then not, then work then stop.they are starting to work more often now.but still stop working.when they do work, everthing works evenly.left and right(lock up the same and release the same).now, when they dont work there is massive pulsating and pulling to the right.the brake peddle is always firm and doesn't fade.when they are working,no pulsating or pulling.it seems when they're working and i drive over 45mph and brake that will trigger them to not work.haven't noticed what makes them start working.

if the pedal is pulsating this seems to point to the ABS system. try having it diagnosed. i think you'll need an ABS diag tool. but this system pulses the brakes automatically in response to the ABS controller. it could be a sensor (the rear axle only has a single sensor mounted in the differential). but i think the only real way to figure it out is with a diag tool.

no idea what a TLC fj-60 is. we'd need to understand the brake system & components in order to offer any suggestions.

maybe broken springs or "nails" or keepers or something. best thing to do is remove the drum and fix what don't look right.

it could be the power booster or master cylinder. could also be one or both of the slave cylinders. check the flexible hoses for leaking/holes. anything 20 years old is subject to component failure. due to age as well as milage.

you should also have a proportioning valve which distributes hydrolic fluid between front & rear brakes. if the rear brakes are the only ones hanging and the proportioning valve separate both front calipers from both rear drums the problem could also be here. if the proportioning valve separates right front & left rear from left front & right rear (diagonal braking system) then its not the proportioning valve.

check the slave cylinders for fluid leaks. if they're leaking - rebuild them. this will also give you the chance to flush the brake fluid. it can't hurt.

check the drum components. you could have rust causing the shoes to hang up on the plates. you can get a lubricant to apply to the plates to help this. replace anything in the brake system which looks rusted or damaged.

then replace the master cylinder. lastly replace the power booster. if this doesn't fix it - its not the brakes.

"disaster" - why the panic ? Most of what you're bringing up is stuff that either works right or doesn't - but not likely cause for an intermittent problem as described. Slopehead is likely right - if those retaining pins are trashed, things could be shucking around in there, sometimes catching, sometimes not. Most drum brake systems are pretty similar.

How do you remove the drums on a 00' Dakota 4x4?
I have the tire off, the retaining clips removed, the e-brake is off. I tried banging on it but without success. It feels like a spring is keeping it on. The drum wiggles but when I try to pull it off it feels like its snapping back into place.

it should pull right off. the "spring" you're feeling is the springs that hold the brake shoes in there.

If the pads have worn into the drum, you may have to back the adjuster off through the slotted holes in the backing plate. Before that though, try giving it a few good raps with a hand sledge.
