Subject: Dirt in Engine Coolant IP: Logged
Message: ok, so today i took a look under the hood to make sure everything looked right and found that the engine coolant cap was loose. I was concerned that dirt and stuff might have gotten in there and sure enough there was clumps of dirt on the end of the dipstick. Now should i have the coolant drained and refilled right away or is it not that critical?
Thanks guys.

Message: coolant cap-as in the radiator?
dipstick-I've been called worse.
These are two separate systems. If you meant the radiator 'coolant cap', then that dirt wouldn't find it's way into the oil. Now dirt clumps on the dipstick, now that could be a problem.

Message: let me clarify. what im talking about is the coolant reserve bottle (has yellow cap) found to the immediate right of the fan (as if you are standing in front of the engine). The dipstick in the coolant reserve bottle had some clumps of dirt on the end of it. im simply wondering if this is an immediate concern.

Message: Yes, it is. Dirt can damage the water pump and clog head passages. It's not like dirt in the oil, but it can cause damage. I would pull the recovery tank and clean it out.

Message: if in doubt - flush the system. the dirt may have migrated into the reservoir from the outside or it could be from the radiator. its also possible that any dirt from the reservoir made its way into the radiator.
better to flush it for peace of mind than to do nothing and worry.
