Subject: 44RE Trany IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dakota 4x4 with a 44RE trans, 231 full/part time transfer case, and 3.55 rearend, it has 112,000 miles. I love the truck but it has started to show problems with it. My trany has a slipping feelling between 1st and 2nd gear, and there is a really funny noise comming from the rearend, it does go away after i put it in FWD part time or full time. If anyone has any info on these issues, it would really help.
Just to give you all a little more info on the truck, it has been used to pull a three stall horse trailer then it was used to pull a 7000# boat that was 4x the size of the truck, if you want to see a pick of it you can goto www.danpets.com. At about 100,000 miles the front end has been redone, bearing, steering, CV joints, brakes, and the rear brakes have been redone. Most of this was done (per Dodge) to take care of a noise problem, none of this worked. Now this, my bank (Bank of Dan) can't handle it anymore, and now i can't get rid of it cus i need a small powerfull truck, like this!!! The Chey that is in the Picture just doesn't pull that boat as good as my little dakota.
Any help that saves me money now, i would like, cus i'm in the Air Force and the Dodge dealers are just F***ing me all over on this!!!!
Thanks,
Dan P

Message: To start with, the transmission is starting to slip. After that many hard miles, it's to be expected. Just change the fluids and adjust the bands and it might get better. Eventually you'll have to replace it. As for the rear, the carrier bearings are shot.
Unless you have an emotional attachment to that truck, it's time for another (newer) one. There are some very nice '00's and '01's coming off lease with relativly low miles and no hard use. Yuppie commuter-mobiles.
