I know this is a Dodge RAM 4.7L, but I have gotten many emails during my 3 years of being a Site Sponsor here at www.DodgeDakotas.com about Amsoil By-Pass Filtration, so here are some photographs. I will try to locate additional photo's of Dodge Dakotas. The only other photos that I have are for the Dodge Cummins Diesel.
2003 Dodge Ram 4.7L Engine
This By-Pass was installed without drilling
any holes and no additional custom bracket!!!

Message: That is a nice setup. Any word on the 'void the warranty' issues with a bypass filter setup? I talked to my Dodge Dealer (yes I know, dumb idea) and he said such a system would void any engine type warranty. Why a system that does a MUCH BETTER job of keeping the oil clean would void th engine warranty is beyond me. However, they have more lawyers than I do.
BTW, this 'void the warranty' issue is the only reason I have not added this type of system to my truck. From what I have read, a bypass system with a good synthetic oil is the best thing for your truck.
And yes, Amsoil counts as a 'good synthetic'.

Warranty Laws
Could using Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils void your new vehicle warranty?
Absolutely not. Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain grades and American Petroleum Institute (API) "minimum" service requirements. Whether the motor oil is petroleum based or synthetic will not affect warranty coverage.
The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets the requirements and was not the cause of the failure. Amsoil exceeds these requirements and has never been deemed the cause of an engines failure.
Even so, Amsoil has its own limited warranty, protecting you even further. In addition, the federally mandated Magnuson-Moss Act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.
If a car dealership, service center or other business states that using Amsoil will void your new vehicle warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to Amsoil Technical Services (AMSOIL Inc., AMSOIL Bldg, Superior, WI 54880). If the business won't provide the statement in writing send Amsoil Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the specific statement was. Amsoil will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence.
Could your new vehicle warranty be voided if you don't change your oil according to the manufacturers recommended change intervals, --- such as when using Amsoil?
Absolutely not. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils are guaranteed to run 25,000 miles to 35,000 miles (Series 2000 Severe Service 0w-30 oil) or one year in mechanically sound engines, providing of course, that the oil is kept free of contaminants by changing the oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendation or when using an Amsoil Super Duty Oil Filter (SDF) changing the filter at 6 months or 12,500 miles (for gasoline engines), whichever comes first.
If using the Amsoil Dual-Remote or Dual-Gard By-Pass Filtration unit then the oil and By-Pass filter is changed as indicated by oil analysis testing. Amsoil coined the phrase "extended drain interval" and it has been validated by over 30 years of industry testing and tens of thousands of motorists and millions of over-the-road miles.
Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils provide extended drain performance because they don't break down in heat like conventional motor oils do. Amsoil Synthetic Motor Oils don't form performance-robbing deposits, and don't volatize (burn off), which alters viscosity and increases oil consumption.
Finally, Amsoil's superior additive package, a key element in the oil's ability to function, holds up under engine stresses, remaining serviceable for the full 25,000 to 35,000 miles, or indefinitely when Amsoil By-Pass Filtration and oil analysis is used.
Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular oil was the cause of an engine failure --- make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a clean bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. The oil can then be sent to two independent testing labs for analysis (labs are located throughout the country and I have listed them here before under "Oil Analysis").
Remember, an informed consumer is THE BEST defense against being taken advantage of by a vehicle dealership or service center.

FYI - Additional WARRANTY Information
First and foremost, there is no way for the dealer to test to see what brand of lubricant you are using (however, in this case -- the Amsoil By-Pass installation would certainly give it away), --- they will only want to see maintenance records to see that maintenance was performed on a timely basis. If this is a concern, this can be accomplished by keeping sales receipts of your purchases and taking photos of your odometer.
Warranty issues can be a pain in the butt even if the dealer has performed all maintenance with OEM supplies. For the record, I am posting Amsoil's recently revised Limited Warranty information in it's entirety below.
(Note: I purchase and use Amsoil lubricants and filters EXCLUSIVELY and take the products to a local "Quickie Lube", or a friendly mechanic or garage, and let them perform the change. They charge a "nominal fee" for this service since I provide the lubricants and filters --- similar to a corking fee when you bring your own bottle "BYOB" of wine, or your own beer, to a restaurant.)
-------------------------------------------------
Recently Revised AMSOIL Limited Warranty - Lubricants
AMSOIL INC. of Superior, Wisconsin hereby warrants that its lubricants are fit for use according to the written recommendations of AMSOIL INC. and in applications specifying one or more of the standards set forth in the product data bulletins and product labels. THIS WARRANTY IS SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING LIMITATIONS:

3. The liability of AMSOIL INC. shall be limited to:

b. The cost, including labor and materials, to repair damaged equipment, or at the option of AMSOIL INC., the cost to replace damaged equipment, resulting directly from the use of AMSOIL INC. lubricants when used in the proper applications.
4. AMSOIL INC. shall not be liable for special, incidental, or consequential damages including, but not limited to, damage or loss of other property or equipment, loss of profits or revenue, cost of capital, business interruption, lodging, towing, or cost of replacement equipment. The liability of AMSOIL INC. arising out of the manufacture, sale, delivery, installation, technical directions or recommendation of any lubricant- whether in contract, tort, warranty or otherwise - shall not exceed the value of the equipment in which the product(s) were used. The remedies to the purchaser herein are exclusive.
5. In the event of a claim against AMSOIL INC., the procedure below must be completely followed.
a. Where the original warranty from the equipment manufacturer is still in effect, the customer shall file a warranty claim with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in accordance with the OEM warranty procedure.

f. AMSOIL INC. may, at its option, notify its insurance carrier of the claim.
g. AMSOIL INC. or its insurance carrier may conduct an investigation that includes, but is not limited to, an inspection of the failed parts, a review of the operating conditions, and a thorough review of the information requested above. The customer agrees to cooperate with such investigation.
h. If AMSOIL INC. or its insurance carrier pays a claim, an attempt may be made to recover amounts paid from the OEM. If this occurs, the customer may be asked to provide further information pertaining to the failure and to cooperate with AMSOIL INC. or its insurer in the recovery process.
THE WARRANTY MAY NOT BE EXTENDED TO COVER:
1. AMSOIL lubricants used in mechanically deficient equipment as a result of abnormal operation; negligence; abuse; damage from casualty, shipment or accident; or equipment modification done without written authorization from the OEM.
2. AMSOIL lubricants that have been used for the purposes of racing or in applications where the OEM required lubricant standards do not match those stated by AMSOIL INC. without the written approval from AMSOIL INC.

8. Failure of equipment due to a pre-existing condition that is unrelated to the use of AMSOIL.
9. Repair or replacement of equipment because of normal wear.
AMSOIL RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REJECT A WARRANTY CLAIM FOR ANY OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REASONS:
1. Failure to follow all OEM recommendations for warranty coverage, including lubricants, maintenance, and drain intervals, prior to the first installation of AMSOIL lubricants.
2. AMSOIL INC. was not notified within 30 days from the date of failure.
3. Claim information is insufficient.
4. Parts inspected do not substantiate a claim or indicate failure.
5. Parts requested were not sent or are unavailable for inspection.
6. Oil sample was not provided.
7. Failure of the customer to follow the written procedure herein.
8. Customer refused to cooperate with the investigation.
9. Failure was the result of an OEM defect.
This warranty shall be governed, interpreted and construed by, and in accordance with, the laws of the State of Wisconsin.
AMSOIL INC. IS THE SOLE AUTHOR OF THIS POLICY AND MAKES NO OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED UNLESS A SEPARATE, SPECIFIC WARRANTY HAS BEEN WRITTEN.
SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES SO THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU. THIS WARRANTY GIVES YOU SPECIFIC LEGAL RIGHTS AND YOU MAY ALSO HAVE OTHER RIGHTS, WHICH VARY FROM STATE TO STATE.

Message: The question was about the bypass filter setup voiding the warranty, not using Amsoil.
Yes the manufacturer can void the warranty to any change made to the oiling system including using the bypass filter but, only if the problem for which a remedy is sought is related to the item in question. That means they can't void your warranty if you take your truck in for transmission problems and they see the bypass filter setup. But if your engine siezes due to oil starvation then they can and will void the warranty for the engine. They can also void if you use any filter other than what is specified in the owners and service manual.
Just wait until the warranty period is up until you install the bypass filter.

Engine oil change intervals are only “recommended” and not required by manufacturers for warranty purposes. Only the condition of the oil needs to be kept to a certain minimum specification during the warranty period. By using a by-pass filtration system and monitoring the oil by oil analysis, one can maintain an oil quality which will far exceed these requirements.

Message: The problem is, I've read stories (some on this site) about people having troubles with the oil system in the Dakota, and the reason the dealer denied the warranty was "user did not change oil" even when the "user" presented receipts and such. In other words, if the oil was not changed at the dealership, it was not changed. Stupid, I know, but again, they have more time/money/lawyers than I do.

Message: that looks like a horrible spot to mount two oil filters. In off roading and such my bumper has come into contact with alot of "obsticles" and i had a minor fender-bender on the way to work one day. the only damage i had was a bumper that was pushed back on the mounts by 3 inches or so. I drove away, but with those i would have lost a few quarts of oil and nice tow bill.

I have the same set-up on my Ram and I don't think there will be a problem unless I hit someone head-on in a collision. Lots'a clearance! If I hit someone head-on I will need more than a new by-pass system. I will need a whole new front end and many components under the hood, radiator first.
My wife owns a Dakota with no by-pass system (yet).
According to my owners manual, my oil change interval is double the competition at 15,000 miles (without a by-pass system).
I use amsoil's best heavy duty diesel oil and plan on extending my drain intervals. I will keep everyone posted.
