i don't think its hard, just irritating.

you have to remove serp belt 1st. then you'll have to remove the alternator/AC Compressor bracket. you may or may not have disconnect AC hoses. if you do, things can get ugly.

once the alt/AC bracket is suitably out of the way you just need to remove the fan/clutch assy and you should be able to readily access the water pump.

plan on at least a full day. i'd plan 2.

A full day? Or 2? I would say that's a little much. If you have all the tools there and things dont go horribly wrong, I would say 2-3 hours possible 4 (if you smoke, drink, chew, take breaks, whatever). As for the AC lines needing to come off, I dont see that happening, but you never know...

It's not a technically difficult job, but can be time consuming if you've never done it before. Follow the instructions in the book (you do have one, don't you?), take your time, and pay attention to the small details. It really will take most of your day.

One of my favorite tips is to use a digital camera. Take a few pictures before starting, and then take more as you take stuff off. Then when it's time to put everything together again, you have some referance material if you need it. If you don't need it, you can always erase the pictures.

My other best tip is to use plenty of plastic zip lock bags. As you take bolts off, clean them up a little and drop them in the bag. Use a box of large freezer bags. And use a Sharpie to write on the bags. You may only have 2-3 small bolts, but drop them into the large bag anyway. If you use a mixture of small and large bags, it's harder to keep them straight. Then drop the bags into a box one behind the other. That way they will be in the order that you need them for reassembly, clean, and ready to install.

Plan on making at least one trip back to the parts store. Don't know why that is. But every job seems to need at least one trip, and sometimes two.

Again, take your time, pay attention to detail, and you'll have it done without any problems. And you'll have saved a boat load of money doing it yourself.

With the v8, it was easier for me to take out the fan shroud and the radiator. I removed the pump with the fan attached.

The V6 may give you enough room so you don't have to take everything apart.

Do a search on changing the water pump and you will find many people telling how they did this.

Always replace the bypass hose. You may even want to replace the lower hose. Good luck.

im not sure about the newer models and how the engine compartment is in them as far as accessability goes, but in 95 and under models with the 3.9, you will only need to remove the radiator shroud, the alternator bracket, and the belt. you can leave the radiator in, but you will need to remove the fan and pulley, which is just 4 bolts holding em on. i did one last summer at work. id never done it before, and it took me about 4 hours to complete. so if you know what your doing, it shouldnt take quite that long. im sure you know this, but make sure that there is no gasket material left before installing the new pump. if it doesnt seal right, your lookin at ripping it out again. enjoy

When I had to put a water pump on a 90 dak V6 I
once had, halfway through the *project* I was
wishing I would have taken it to a garage (not
the dealer. didn't want to get raped) and let
them do it. I did get it finished, no leaks and
no parts left over!

Now I have a 02 with 4.7.. If that one goes bad,
I just may let someone else do it. The biggest
problem is we all have the basic 3/8" 1/2" socket
sets, end wrenchs and such but we never seem to
have that *special* tool needed for that once in
a life time job.

A set of rachets and wrenches should be all you need for this project. It is much easier to pull the old gasket off with a razor blade. Do youself a big favor and buy a few.

If you replace your lower hose, make sure you yank the old spring out. The new hoses don't come with one.

You can leave them there, but with the v8 it gives you a bit more room if you take them off.

If you remove the AC and bracketry, lay them on the left side of the engine. Do not disconnect the hoses. Your AC will not leak.

thanks for the advise.

on the 3.9 v6 the brackets are in the way. when i replaced rad & heater hoses i had to get them loose so i could get at the bypass hose. i left the alt & compressor attached to the bracket and just moved it around as i needed to to work on the hoses.

to get the water pump out it looks like the whole mess has to be placed out of the way to get the pump out, clean gaskets, & re-install.

i assume that the easiest way to move the compressor is to remove it from the bracket????

i agree - don't disconnect the AC hoses at any cost.

Your new pump should have a pulley pressed on it already. Does your old pump have the heater hose attachment screwed in or pushed in? 92 were screwed in. I thought 93 and up were pushed in and held in with an o-ring.

The easiest way to remove the old gasket remover is with a gasket scraper. It looks like a long screwdriver with an attachement at the end to hold a razor blade. I replaced the water pump once without it and then decided to upgrade to a flowkooler. This time I bought a gasket scraper. The scraper cut the time in half.

A guy at work just came in with a drippy pump. On his '94. Looked up the Pumps and I see they have both Pressed on and bolted on Pulleys listed for that year. It looks like the bolted on pulleys have a wider spread bolt pattern for the Clutch Fan can anyone confirm that. I think I got volunteered to help/do the pump for him. Also, did you guys reuse those factory spring loaded hose clamps? the one Bypass hose looks like a bi**ch to get off. Not to much Flex room.

BTW... '94 V6 2WD
