Message: I have an '02 Durango with a crummy AC system. The problem seems to be that the heat is always coming thru the HVAC system even when I turn the knob all the way to the cool setting. The reason for this problem is that there is no cutoff to hoses that feed coolant to the heat exchange system. The coolant continuously flows thru the heat exchanger. This results in an increase in vent temps of 10-15 degrees. I read about a guy in Saudi Arabia that removed the coolant hoses that feed the HVAC and plugged the holes. This supposedly resulted in a 10 degree drop in vent temps in AC mode.
I would like to install a valve to cut flow of the coolant to the HVAC unit. Has anyone done this mod? What type of valve did you use and where to buy it?

A flip of the ball valve, instant heat again!

Message: You may remember those vacuum control heater hose
cut off valves used in the older dodge trucks
years ago. Might look into installing one of
those in either line to the heater core.
Dodge used a vacuum switch that would pull the
vacuum valve closed when you turned the heat
control all the way to cold or near it. You would
need some sort of vacuum switch inside the cap or
under the hood to make it work.
One other easier way if you don't care about
any kind of auto control... Install a water type
"gate" valve in either hose. Just close the valve
during the summer months.
The reason auto makers run water through the core
year around is to prevent liquid from just setting
in the core (that will happen if you install a
valve of any type) thus rotting the core out in a
much shorter time than normal.
You *may* have a vent control problem also causing
what you are talking about.. When I turn my heat
control all that way down, I never feel any
unwanted heat.
Good luck...

Message: Ok, I had the same problem.
It is the cable from your dash cool & hot switch going to the panel that operates a door that's cuts off the hot air from your heater core.
All you need to do is Pull your glove box down, so you can see towards the center of the dash, it's behind your stereo, now, turn your knob back and forth, See, if the wire got disconnected. That is most likely your problem.
