I know this is a dakota site but does anyone know if there are any problems with the durango ball joints like on the dakota? or any other common problems they might have? Also is the insurance a lot higher on the durango than the dakota? Thanks

Yes, the Durangos also have the ball joint problem. If you search enough, it sounds like they also have tranny problems and there is also a lot about the engines accumulating sludge. I'm not sure how much there is to the engine and tranny reports, but the ball joint problem is for sure. Just do a search on Durangos and problems.
Make sure you do your research before you decide to get one.

There's something here I don't understand. The Durango has problems that the dakota doesn't: tranmission, oil sludge. Why is that? Don't the two vehicles have the same suspension and drivetrain?

So you are all saying that if I buy a 98 durango that the chances are good I will have problems with it? Or is it rare?

I would say your chances of having problems with it are higher than a lot of other vehicles.
Actually .boB, when I took my Dakota to have the transfer case rebuilt, the mechanic obviously was a Dodge guy because he was telling about his Durango and his daughter's Ram and so forth. I got the impression he's worked on quite a few Dakota and Durango transmissions and transfer cases including his own.

The chances of problems ARE rare and really you have no greater risk of problems with a Dakota or Durango than with any other vehicle. The Dur/Dak's DO have their problems, but so does every other vehicle in production. The reason the problems are amplified with these vehiles here is that this is a board specific to the Dakota. The only two types of people you'll find here are people that love their truck or are researching a problem. So yes, the problems exist, but I can honestly say I'd still buy a Dakota any day. There's simply too many people out there with success stories to ignore them, especially if you're going to lend creditibilty to the complaints..

Check out an issue of Consumer Report. Or better yet, use Justi's logic and check out board of other vehicles you are considering and see what they are complaining about.
The number say you will have better luck with a Lexus, Infinity, Toyota, Nissan...
While some of these may not sound like a real SUV, one of the Lexus SUVs was just voted 4x4 of the year by Peterson's 4-Wheel & Off-Road, which is a serious 4 wheeling publication. The Toyota 4Runner is probably the best bet for reliability and off-road capability. You will hear a lot of "every vehicle has their problems" but some are worse than others. My best advise is to make sure you know what your getting into with a Durango. You see a lot of used Durangos for sale and they aren't expensive at all. I think the poor resale value is due in part to the quality.

The main reason people are unloading Durangos is the heinously bad gas mileage.
