Subject: radio out but fuses good IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I own a 1994 Dakota with an after market Sony radio I installed a year ago (Jan. 2003)with a Crutchfield wiring kit to plug into the factory harness. Everything works great. A week ago I was playing the music loud and when the song changed to an even louder song with bass the radio power went out. OK no big deal, I'll replace the fuse and won't do that again. Unfortunately all the fuses look good. Under the dash, under the hood, and even the one plugged in the rear of the radio itself. I noticed the overhead light is not working too! I have the overhead console as well, the temperature and compass work but not the two map lights. Anyone got a clue as to what I should do next? I got a amp/volt meter.
Thanks,
Kevin K

Message: if it were just the radio i'd say you probably blew the internal amps in the sony. but since you have interior lights which are also dead i'm stuck.
GMs used to have something called "fuse-able" links. these were fuses which were embedded into the wiring harness itself. if the dak has these you may have trashed one of these things.
try using the volt meter to measure 12V power at the input to the sony. measure ground from the body of the truck. get the crutchfield wiring sheets out and find out where 12V is. if it doesn't have 12V keep tracing back until you find out where it appears.
if it has 12 volts you'll have to trace grounds next. find the ground input to the sony. measure resistance between the ground input to the sony and the battery ground post. if you get an open circuit (anything above an ohm or 2) keep tracing back until you find out where the ground is "open". if you have ground at the sony the truck's power wiring is not the problem.

Message: Thanks for the help. I'll try doing what you said and update my progess in this post. There is one thing that triggers my memory now. The little button in the door jam that turns the overhead light off and on has been acting up for some time now. I take a close look at that button and see if I have a short there. My truck is getting up there in years but still running strong, gotta love that 318.
Thanks Again,
Kevin

Message: Perhaps someone knows of a site that has the wiring diagram for '94 Dakotas? It would be easy to trace back to where your radio and lights come together electrically if you had the diagram, and you could find any hidden fuses as well.

Message: Check the relays under the hood. The fuses may be good but relays fail too. I found that twice before when I had problems with my 91.

Message: Do the map lights normally come on when you open the door?
If you had the Infinity system in your truck originally, pull the kickpanels and check the wiring going to the door speakers and the pin switch that kicks on the dome light. The Infinity speakers are powered (at least they are on my 96, and the pin switch is a ground. Check for shorts there.
It could be totally unrelated to the song that you were blasting.

Message: Thanks Everyone, for your input.
I was able to pull the truck into the warehouse at work tonight where it is nice a warm. After pulling the dash panel, the radio, and checking things with the volt/ohm meter I decided to run a power line directly from the battery to the radio. As I hoped everything came on; radio and lights. OK then it's gotta be a fuse. I go back under the hood and did a double check of every fuse, of course now I find the bad fuse, 24 hours later after I pull the dash apart and everything. All Well, lesson learned or should I say I needed the practice anyway! I guess I'm an idiot but then again I was doing this yesterday outside in the cold, so that's my excuse. Thanks again to all for your help.
