Subject: OEM compass, etc. install..... IP: Logged
Message: My 01 quad wasn't ordered with the computer, now I have one and want the compass, etc. to work.
Many people have posted they got the compass to work, and I"m wondering how? Which wires for the power?
The three wires to the lights in the over head puzzle me. One's always hot, one is never hot, and one is hot after the dimmer timer goes off! So after the dimmer timer chuts the cab lights off, 2 of the leads are hot.
And, the one thats never hot, actually gets some current when I open the glove box, and the light in there and the circuit tester flickers when it's tried and the glove box is open. Go figure.
So my question to start is, hos did you get the compass to work, it's a 2001 QC model.
Maybe those with a 2001 manual, could let me know what the wires in the regular overhead are for. They're yellow/black stripe, pink, and yellow. I have a cd from a 2002, and they keep changing the wiring to them.
TIA,
Todd

Message: I don't know if this will help but...
I've noticed that many of the circuits in the Dakota are backwards to what I would consider to be logical. They will switch on the ground side of a circuit. So one side of a lamp, switch ,etc. will always have +12V while the other side is grounded/not grounded to complete/not complete the circuit.
I have troubles with that because even a circuit that is 'off' still has +12V that I can short out.

Message: Thanks Doug,
and your reply sure didn't hurt, thanks.
I know what you mean by this, it seems many vehicles are wired this way, and the (-) side of the circuit has the switch in it as you say.
Now, If I could just find out, manual page, etc., what those three wires are for, and whar the three wires on my 2001 computer are for.
The 2001 computers three wires are:
Red
Orange
Black
TIA,
Todd

Message: I have an '03 manual (and truck). This evening I will look it up and see what wires mine would have. I also know DC likes to change odd little things (like wire colors) for no apparent reason, so my wires may not be your wires.

Message: I have a question about this also. I have an '01 CC with the infamous clip..does anyone know if you can take this out and replace it with just the temp and compass display from a 98-01 Ram? I don't need all the other features, just compass and temp would be great. Wondering if that would work... thanks in advance for any help.
