Message: I want to add a overhead computer to a 2003 Dakota. I don't have a problem with the wiring, I am trying to find out what digital display (with Homelink) will work with my truck. I know Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep 1999 to present will bolt into my exsisting upper console but don't know if they will work with my truck. Does anyone out there have a connection to a factory parts department, to find out how many different replacement over head digital display computers(with Homelink) are being presently made for replacement in 1999 to present Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep. Thanks Alot for any info. !!!! Roy

Message: Roy,
All you have to do is put the one wire from the PCI bus from the truck to your puter, and all the data is there, if you have the temp sensor, the outside temp is there too.
I think that's what your asking.

Message: Thanks for getting back to me Todd !! What I am trying to find out is: what upper computer displays will work with my 2003 Dakota. The wiring is no problem. The truck has the temp. sensor. I didn't want to buy a used one and not have it work with my truck. If the Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep parts books shows the same replacement display is used in 1999 to present, than I will know what will work in my truck. Thanks again for getting back to me Todd!! Anything anybody else out there knows or can find out is appriciated !! Roy

Message: Roy, I'm trying to tell ya, if you get one for your year truck, and already have the temp sensor, than everything will work.
My 2001's puter only has three wires to the whole thing, and one is a ground. Those PCI bus systems are pretty cool. All the data over one wire, digitally, each with it's own code.

Message: Ha Matt, Thanks for the info. I am hopeing to find out what other years will work in my truck so I can get a good deal on a used one. I am sure Chrysler didn't make a different one for each year but I don't know what years are the same. I will try to get the info from a Chrysler parts department.I hope alot of the years use the same replacement modle# modular so I have a bigger market to buy from. Thanks again for getting back to me. Roy

Message: I have a 2004 Quad Dakota Sport Plus. From what I can tell, the outside temp sensor is located next to the radiator on the passenger side of vehicle. The truck is at the dealership right now having a few things installed (bedliner, hitch, rear slider) The parts guy their gave me a price of $860 for the console but told me the wiring was not in place nor would the computer support the overhead console. Is he yanking my chain? I have found a console for less than what he is asking and was wondering if the 04 would work the same as what is being explained here. Please email me at c_murray@charter.net with any information. Thanks in advance.

Message: You might as well install a GPS now, because in about three hundred years, the earth's magnetic field will begin to fluctuate. Every day your compass will point north in a different direction. This might continue for about 600 years, then it will finally come to rest with the poles opposite than it is today.

2lman29,
I picked up a brand new one of this site here, for $80-US. Wired it up for free. Works excellent! All modes, options, etc.

Message: Hey guys. A few months ago I had my trim removed on the windshield pillar deal re wiring my radar detector.
Anyway I noticed that in my 2003 Dakota there is close to a DOZEN wires going overhead from the drivers side pillar.
So, I wonder if those are pre wired for the overhead comp? Plus there's some funny looking connectors under the dash going to nothing like it's there for upgrade, security, etc?
Anyway. My truck was pretty well equiped except for mainly the overhead comp. Maybe mine is pre wired? It sure as hell don't use those dozen wires for just the overhead lights!
Has anyone else noticed this? And has anyone else looked to see where I could even BUY a overhead comp to install?

Message: Graph Dak,
In the A pilar there are alot of wires.
Trust me on this one, the computer on my 01 QC, uses three wires for the O/H computer! All the sensor data, is carried over ONE wire, the PCI bus. The other two are a ground, and a switched 12v.
The dealer, tells people it will take anywhere from 3-6 hundred $ to wire it up. BS, I did mine for free, without any salvage yard harnesses, etc.
I researched it for a few weeks, it's so simple, even I can do it!!
Of course, you will probably want some kind of reostat for yours, like you elected to on your fan! LOL.
The port you're refering to is more than likely the data communications port, which is just under the dash, just to the left of the steering column.

Message: I think this is the data comm port you are talking about...
Then I have these three un used plugs here.
The three plugs on the left were factory to what? One plug is like 20 pins. The other two smaller. The 9 pin MOLEX connector with the blue cable connected to it is MY home brewed electronic anti theft system which works f*cking reat! I can leave my keys in the truck with the radio on and no one can jump in and start it.
Anyway. I really would like to get a overhead comp. What you say makes sense. It wouln't take much to send data to the overhead comp. Where did you get your overhead comp? Used, new?
And are any of those dozen wires in my pillar for it? I haven't looked into it yet.
I'd like to have the built in garage opener plus the other neat features as well. They work great in our 2004 Grand Caravan SXT.

Message: Graf,
The programmable garage door opener, etc, is a separate system, I don't have it, I velcroed mine in the little compartment in the rear, and it works great, and is hidden.
I got my computer, off of this very site, from a guy who bought one new, and then didn't install it and sold his dak. It was for the same year and a QC, like mine.
Trust me on this one again, it's much easier to run the wires, (3), down the A pilar, and to the fuse box, and a wire to the PCI bus, which splices into the wire at the data port terminal.
I ran the ground to a bolt near the fuse box, the 12v to the dash light fuse, and the Pci bus wire I spiced to the PCI wire that runs to the data port. Taht way using the data port is not affected.
My computer was new and never installed, so I had to calibrate the compass, tells how in the owners manual. It's basically doing three circles in a row.
As far as trying to find the right wires already there, trust me, it's not worth it. I could get into why, but I'm at work and doin't feel like it now. It's much easier to run the wires.
To get the ambient temp sensor to work, you have to have the sensor.
Good luck, and feel free to e mail

Message: Well if it's using the basic THERMISTER type for a temp sensor I can get those. Our IAT uses them. Trane A/C units use them. Etc etc all with the same factor of heat vs. resistance, etc.
I do want one with the garage door openers if possible. I've got the remote that came with the garage door opener but the ones built in the DOdge computer are cool.
Our Grand Caravan has it. Right next to the button that opens the rear hatch electrically and the two more buttons that slide the two side doors electrically. :P
That's fancy.

Message: I installed a 99 overhead console in my 04 Dakota. It came with
the factory wire harness that runs down the A piller but the end
was cut off. Can someone please tell me how to hook up the 6
wires I have. This is what I know so far...
Black w/ Brown tracer = Ground
Blue w/White tracer = 12v
2 of the wires go to the temp sensor in the engine compartment.
What color wire goes to the data port?
Please help....

Maybe someone else knows for sure about a 99 puter.

Message: Mono,
Some of the years had different color wires, etc.
You'll have to look at a schematic form a shop manual to know for sure. Have you tried searching some of the old posts? I'm sure you probably have,
Good luck
