Message: I need to replace my serp belt and the tensioner, (99 w/318). I have a DAYCO on there now and it's been pretty noisy. Any recommendations on what to get or avoid when I change them?
TIA!

Message: i replaced mine a few years ago w/ a gates belt (3.9 v6). i can't tell any difference between it and the original belt. i don't notice any noises under the hood i can attribute to the belt.
maybe its not the belt that's noisy. maybe its a bearing in one of the pulleys?

Message: I think it's just the belt because it gets better when fully warmed up. The tensioner shows that it isn't up for replacement, but I decided to change em both anyway. So, Gates is good? I'll look em up. TNX

Message: also check your belt routing. i've seen some pics in a few truck mags of dakota engine bays where the belt doesn't seem to be routed the same way mine is routed (3.9 v6 - the 3.9 & 5.2 routing are identical). you should have a routing diagram on the under side of the hood somewhere. if its not routed correctly this might lead to noise.

Message: I checked NAPA first because I like them. Dunno who's brand they are selling, but it's $74 for the tensioner and $38.99 for the belt. If it was close I'd buy, but given that much difference I'll order online.

Message: after shopping around, I decided to go for that online place. I used their phone number to see if I could find a warm body though ;-) I did. Shipping was free (ground) and there was a small $2.99 handling fee. I should get them bofe' in about a week + or -.

Message: At 65000 K I had to replace my serp belt. At that time we noticed the tensioner was seized and stuck it in a vise and lubricated it. That did not work for more then a couple weeks. I have since replaced the tensioner with a Dayco and all is fine. Here in Canada the belt was around $50 and tensioner $120

Message: Napa or dealer are the only places I can get belts for my 95. I was told that there are 2 belt sizes, one is 1/2" longer than the other. Advance and Autozone carry the smaller of the 2, the dealer and Napa carry the larger of the 2, the tensioner adjusts for the larger size. I was told the differnece depended on the A/C and who installed it - dealer or factory. I can neither confirm nor deny this whole A/C thing, I just know I have to get the belt from either a dealer or Napa, the ones from advance and autozone would not fit.

Message: Although I am usually turned off by re-hashing year old posts, this is actually a good opportunity for me to report on the purchase.
For the past 2 months, the belt and/or tensioner are squealing like a stuck pig. The truck sounds like a junk wagon. I think it is the bearing on the tensioner making the sqeaking, but if I spray some junk on the belt it temporarily quiets. Dunno. I removed the belt and washed it thoroughly with soap and water and dried it. I also took sandpaper and scuffed all of the pullies and then cleaned them thoroughly as well. It was of no help.
I plan on popping the bearing out of the tensioner pully and replacing it to see if that cures me. I've just been living with it lately and it's starting to really piss me off.

Message: If the squeaking stops when you spray a lubricant on the belt, that means its the belt, bearings would continue to make noise unless the oil hit the bearing itself. When my belt started squeaking, it showed no signs of wear, so don't judge just by how the belt looks.

Message: guys does it really matter which brand of belt you buy? come on, it's a piece of rubber with some grooves in it, it's not like you're buying a whole new truck here, jeeze.
just get one of them, you're not gonna get cancer from it i promise. your truck won't explode or die mysteriously on the highway because you bought a brand a belt when you should have bought brand 8212a.
should i wipe two times or three times? ah hell i'll figure it out on my own, i can't wait for a reply to my post here anyway.

dont let the a holes get to you. many people benefit from your opinions and advice, dont stress those who run thier mouths
that said hmm you have no idea what your talking about. i had a nissan frontier before my dak and when the nissan belt went at 36k i replaced it with a store brand belt, that didnt last 10k. no matter how tight i got it, it never stoped making noise. i then replaced it with a nissan belt and that lasted 40k with no noise before i sold the truck to get my dak.

Message: Help guys,
I have a 2003 Dodge Dak/V8. I had my water pump replaced a few months back and serp belt. It squeals to the point it's embarassing to drive down the road. Replaced the serp belt twice and just had a new pulley/tensioner put on today. It's absolutely NO BETTER. Squealing like never before. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
