Subject: Need Help With Klunk IP: Logged
Message: 91 Dodge Dakota, 318, Automatic Trans, 4X4. After normal to hard braking, When I release the brake or start to accelerate, I can see the transmission move slightly and feel a klunk. I have checked the trans and motor mounts, they are good. U-Joints are new, Backlash in Diff appears normal, Doesn't feel like brakes, if I smash the brake pedal after the klunk to attempt to re-create it, all appears normal. I'm running out of ideas. Any new ones out there, your post is appreciated.

Message: I'm guessing you're watching the transfer case lever move. My '00 Dak does the same thing. I think it's called driveline wrap. When you hit the brakes you normally let up on the gas. The engine goes to idle which 'loosens up' the driveline which had been tight due to the power flow going from the engine to the axle. At that moment the rear wheels are still spinning at speed as tough they were under power, while the tranny, t/c, driveshafts, and diff unload. When you get back on the gas the engine as to tighten everything up again, that's were the klunk comes in. It happens.
