Subject: Fuel Pressure Question
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm guessing that the fuel pressure should be constant thru all rpm's? My fuel pressure is 31psi at idle. Should it remain at 31 at 3000rpms or does it drop to say 20psi? What is considered normal?

Thanks in advance,
GP

My fuel pressure drops off from 31psi as I step on the throttle. It drops to somewhere around 10 psi and lower. Is this normal? When my truck cuts out(no compression-like a stall) and rpm's start to drop (my foot still on the throttle), the fuel pressure keeps dropping as if I was still dumping fuel. Once the rpm's drop to 200-400 the engine comes back to life until I hit 1500-2500rpm. It's much worse while moving in gear under a load. Even more so going up a hill. I'm just trying to figure out if I have a fuel pump problem. I have replaced the fuel filter which was very hard to blow thru and I took the new one ,I had put on a week ago, off tonight to see how it was. It was fine. I really don't want to take off the truck bed to get to the tank if I don't have a problem there. Is there a sensor in my tranny that could cause similar problems? Could my torque converter be locking up or something? Speed sensor? ANyone here?????? Hello.......

what year is the truck? i think the '97 3.9L/5.2L specs at idle are ~48 PSI. you need to find someone w/ a shop manual for the truck and check the specs. if its low at idle i'm guessing its your fuel pump as well.

you may not have to remove the bed, altough its easier if you can. i drove the truck as close to empty as i could before replacing the pump. i lowered the gas tank after almost all the fuel was gone. its not too hard, just way beyond annoying. very poorly designed.
