Subject: Power Steering Gone South for the Winter IP: Logged
Message: Anybody else have this problem???
I've got a 2000 Dakota QC 4x4 with the 4.7 and the 45RFE auto trans.
This year it is at it worst...(the power steering, that is) - it refuses to work when I first start the truck up, and then grudgingly begins to start helping me turn the wheel....but it cuts out entirely at random intervals and forces me to get into a wrestling match with the steering wheel in parking lots.
I checked the fluid, and it is full.
Is there any kind of recall on the steering? Or something that can be done to improve it? It really does seem to be getting worse....the truck has about 91,000 miles on it now.
Hope somebody has some light to shed on this! Thanks Dakota Forum....

Message: You could try Auto-Rx, works great. Check out their web site. Your case sounds terminal though.

Switching over to a very good quality synthetic fluid will usually eliminate your cold weather problems with your power steering.
The fluid that Dodge uses as factory fill tends to thicken in cold weather and that is what causes a lot of people to think that their power steering is going bad.
I use the AMSOIL ATF in my power steering system.
At one time I lived in Pennsylvania and it made the world of a difference in cold weather.

Message: I have a 2000 dodge dakota with the 4 cylinder motor, and I have been looking everywhere to find out what kind of power steering fluid this thing takes! It would be a great help if anyone out there could tell me. Thanks!
