Today while pulling my Quads up a hill the check engine light came on.

Did the key trick and got a code P0031

Mine is a 2003 Dak 4.7
I was out of town. Looked in a Haynes or something in a Checker auto. It only went up to 2000 Dakota/Durango/Ram and had no such code listed.

I thought maybe it was from using a colder t-stat and I was going to where it snowed, but the temp was at it's peak operating range (1/3 scale) when the light came on. Also, I expected it to go away for a while after I reset the PCM by unplugging the battery for a few min.

The light just comes back on.

Who has a code look up?

I need to know what it is in case it is due to one of my mods. It is under warranty and I haven't changed anything to the truck in like 6 months. It just had it's normal maintenance from the dealer.

Any help is appreciated. If I could buy a manual to look these up myself I would.

The code P0031 is HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor1) I hope this helps. As to what it means, you have to plug into a code reader. By the way I got my code reader from Kragens and it reads OBD 1 and OBD 2 and of course comes with the book. It was around $140.00. Very handy as my 2002 4.7 is also modified with a kenne bell and computer and exaust upgrades. Good Luck.

SO you are saying the code reader would be more specific to the problem?

IS this the O2 sensor you are talking about?

I just have two of them, one before and one after the single cat on my 2003.

I will probably go check all my connections for my mods such as my IAT mod (which I think does nothing anyway) and maybe check a few more things and try clearing it again. At least I know it has nothing to do with the t-stat temp.

If I can't get it to clear, I'll just take it to the dealer and play dumb LOL. It's only got 12k miles on it and THEY just had it in for it's 12k pre-paid maintenance last week.

Thanks for the info. I'll get busy on it when I get home from work this afternoon.

yeh, the book breaks it down to the exact location of the problem with other code numbers and letters that specifies the problem. Very cool. I wanted to say it was the 02 censor because of the load you were putting on it and the fuel mixture could have been out of whack. If you fowled the 02 censor you may be able to clean or replace it. It may be you just need to reset the code, which the reader also does. But you know how it is sometimes on this board. If you give a guessing answer someone may slam you for it. I didnt want to deal with that crap.Hope this all helps. Got tired of the 160 tstat that came with my blower and put the 195 back in and no more codes for that, but yours is definantly a different problem.

Turn your key from off to on 3 times in a row (without turning far enough to engage the starter) and keep the key to the ON position on the 3rd time.

Look where your odometer is and if any codes exist it will display them.

As far as my code, funny thing.
I went thru removing a few of my mods that haven't proven themselves to me. One of which was the IAT inline resistor. I removed it. I also decided to remove my cold 160 t-stat and put the stock 195 back in. I did this because I didn't want the dealer to find out.
Well, while I was testing the t-stat housing for leaks I crawled under the truck where the two O2 sensers are. The front one had the wires touching the exhaust! I pulled them off and cleared the PCM. No more fault.

I drove the truck hard tonight. Temp gauge was staying on the first line just above the "C" with the 160 t-stat and now goes back to 1/3 like it did before the t-stat swap. The truck seems to have the same get up and go according to the Butt Dyno anyway.

Things I left modded were the TPS adjustment (no reason to undo that), My Home brew CAI, removed clutch fan, and the exhaust.

Oh, now my electric fan stays on continuous once it warms up because I have it set to 170 or so degrees and the 195 t-stat is back in. I will have to open the case to it and adjust it accordingly. I will most likely drop the 180 t-stat back in. I know it wont cause no problems here in AZ. My 160 t-stat didn't cause me any problems either but since I can't prove a gain, why f**k with the emmisions to that extreme?
