Subject: Fog light wiring IP: Logged
Message: After searching through all the archives, I'm still unsure if aftermarket fog lights can be wired to the factory wires so I don't have to use a different switch. I would like to get the Piaa 510 lights to replace the factory fogs, but only if I can use factory switch. Does anyone know for sure if this can be done or not? Thanks.

Message: I'm sure it could be, you'd just have to cut the connector off of the factory harness and connect to your new lights.

Message: I would not suggest wiring anything along with your headlights, you can put a relay in so they will turn on whenever you have your stock lights on. The problem I would forsee is that the stock wiring is not going to be strong enough/ or intended for such a load as those new PIAA lights. You could very easily blow your switch or fuses (fuses are more probable). Your best bet is to run the wires separately. If I figure it correctly, and you are running 85 Watt bulbs, you will be putting about a 14 extra watt load on your switch and fuse, and I dont see it working.

You didn't have a problem with the fogs staying on all the time like others have had? Did you do anything special?
Thanks,
Greg

Message: I have my fog lights wired directly to the battery through a relay. The relay is connected to pin #2 (or #1, I forget) of my light switch. Fog lights are one when I turn on my switch.

Message: Demon, I gotcha, when i read it it sounded like he wanted to wire the lights directly to the stock wiring (main power). But with the relay involved and power straight from the battery should work great. Butch, not trying to insult your intelligence but did you mean to use the relay from the stock lights?

Message: abnscout82-
No prob, I don't have any intelligence when it comes to this. All I want to know is if I can wire fog lights so that I can turn them on just as I do with my fog lights now, instead of running a totally different switch. Hope that clears it up a little...

Why does it matter to you when I have them on? I live in the Sacramento Valley, and yes, it is foggy quite a bit. I'm not quite sure why it bothers you so much that I like driving with my fog lights on, maybe you should get a job or something instead of providing stupid remarks. I don't want to put a toggle switch on my dash, and that's why I'm trying to find out.

Message: Greg,
The easiest and probably only way to do that is to use a relay. The most well know example of a relay is your starter sellenoid. It takes a little bit of electrical energy to work a switch for a lot of energy. I hope the light set came with a relay with it, if not you just have to go out to your local autoparts store and get one. Probably want one for at least 15 amps, i would go with about 30 just to be sure. Then you run the high power line of the relay directly from the battery through the relay to your lights and ground the other side of the actual lights. The other line through your relay (low power) run from the positive side of your lights through the relay to a ground. Now you have to decide, do you want your fog lights to turn on while your driving lights are on or when your headlights are on? when you decide then use that set of lights for your power for the relay. the easiest for that will be to pull the light fixture out and use a meter.

Message: Greg D. Dont forget to fuse the battery or high power side wire that abbscout82 mentions. Correct fuse size = total light wattage divided by 12. For example, if you have 110watts of light, then use a 10-15A fuse. It is a good practice to never connect an electrical accessory
directly to the battery without a fuse. If the accessory fails, there is no way to stop the current flow and a fire might result. (The low power side of the relay is protected by the stock vehicle fuse for the factory fog lights.) Good Luck.

Message: Greg D.,
No I have not had that problem. I did nothing special. I hooked the PIAA 510s directly to the stock wiring. Everything works great. The stock lamps were 35watt; the 510s are 55watt.
abnscout82,
I just used the stock circuit, switch and relay. The wiring diagrams in the shop manual indicate 18 gauge wire and 20 Amp fuse in the circuit.

Message: gregor,
Good point on the fuse, guess I assumed there would be a fuse already included in the wiring package.
Greg D. Make sure you use a fuse, anyone who has had a wire get shorted out knows the consequences. I would guess for your set, there is already a fuse in the main power wires for your lights.
Silver: Sounds like you just replaced your fog lights with other ones. If I am not mistaken, Gred D is installing his new, not replacing.

Message: Does anybody remember when REAL fog lights had an AMBER lens? There was a reason for that...in fog white light reflects back at the driver making driving even more difficult. Amber fog lights were big in the 40's & 50's, kinda disappeared in the 60's & 70's, except for government service vehicles, but came back in the 80's as a cosmetic option on trucks and SUV's with clear lenses. I have them on my Durango and they are worthless. Increasing the brightness with aftermarket non-amber "fog lamps" just blinds everyone who has to drive around you. And you will be blinded when you try and use them in heavy fog. Just food for thought!

Slt - Where the hell is the two-wire connector
for the headlight switch at?
I'm prewired for fog lights so I know the two
wire connector is behind the dash somewhere,
but where?
