Message: When buying a used truck what is there to look for to tell if the ball joints are bad or going bad? Is it just certain years or models that have problems? Is it after they have so many miles or does it just happen whenever. Im looking at a 2000 sport club cab, 4x4 with 32,000 miles. Thanks

Message: Any mechanic should be able to verify the ball joints. You should always have a used vehicle looked over by an independent mechanic before you think of buying.

Message: Having done a search on here it seems the problem is
primarily with 97+ Daks. All models. You can jack the tire
up at the control arm and do the yank test on it and see if
the wheel deflects. If it does it's bad. There is an
instrument you can use and the FSM does state the
tolerance on a ball joint being good or not. From what I've
read I would count on replacing the things to be safe. The
parts are $180 from rockatuo.com Install for me was $175
per wheel (2 joints installed). At least the Moog parts are
greasable and I have piece of mind knowing my front tires
aren't just going to fall off.
