Subject: 03s, 04s with ball joint problems? IP: Logged
Message: Bought an 04 Dak Quad Cab V8 5speed auto 4x4 Sport Plus on 10/31/03.
I checked about a month ago, nobody was able to tell me much about the ball joint issue for my particular truck. So now I just wanted to ask once again, all those with 03s and 04s out there, how are your front ends holding up? What mileage do you have? What issues have you had?
The NHTSA website acts like there was a re design of the part for 03 so they're concentrating the investigation on up to the 02s, but I dont know whether the durability of the part has actually improved and what exactly about it was redesigned.

Message: Just got my inspection sticker the other day. I took it to a place that is aware of the ball-joint issue. They said the front end was tight. This was the first time I wouldn`t of minded a rejection sticker, lol , but it passed.
eddy I haven`t heard of any 03 or 04`s with warped rotors BTW. Keep your fingers crossed.

Message: I have an 2003 quad cab 4.7L AWD 4X4, 5sp auto. the only issue i have is a squeaky suspension on bumps and acceleration and stopping. Dont think this is ball joints but the noise is starting to bother me. i have 17000 miles on this vehical. i have noticed though on rainy days the noise is not present. Not sure what to do about the squeaky suspension other than taking it to the dealer since it is still under warranty. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Message: jimk I had the exact same problem. It`s the bushings on the front sway bar. Really bad when cold and dry with sand and salt. Dealer replaced bushings under warranty. Been quiet as a mouse ever since. Probably just a matter of time before it happens again though.

Message: My 04 is also suffering from a squeaky suspension and it is very annoying. Even more annoying though is the starter sticking in cold weather for about 1 second.

Message: Mine makes a noise at start up when it's really cold but I don't think it sounds like the starter sticking. Bizarrely enough it sounds like a zipping noise for a split second.

Message: There's 6K on the 2003 QC that I'm driving this week. The front end clanks and clunks over bumps, turns, and even when I hit the brakes. I'm scared to do much at all with it.
I'll be glad when I get my 2002 CC back from the shop this week; 20K and no suspension problems yet *knocks on wood*.

When I bought the truck I was curious as to why checking the front suspension seems to be a recommended part of almost every single dealer service. Then I saw 60 minutes and I understood.
Hopefully I got one of the good ones. Ill keep my fingers crossed. And No matter what, I am still loving this truck.

Message: I'm about to ask a real dumn question. Is there any differnce in the ball joints on the R/T's and the regular Dakota's? The reason I ask is because you never hear an R/T owner complain about ball joints. I've owned 2 gen3 R/T's and 2 gen3 SLT's. Both the 2001 and 2002 Slt's were reg-cabs and both had ball joint problems. Both the 98 & 2000 R/T's were Club Cabs CC's and neither of them have had any front end problems. Is that the norm?

Message: jeremiah2360. You were right about the bushings causing the squeaky suspension sound. I just got my 03 Quad Cab 4.7L AWD 4x4 back from the Dealer shop today. They replaced the sway bar, sway bar bushings and the upper right side control arm. They replaced the control arm because they said it was loose. I not sure if I needed to be concerned about that or not. Anyway, I only have one small little churp coming from somewhere but I can live with this compared to the squeaking I was having before. For anyone else reading this I have 17800k miles on the truck.
