Subject: EMERGENCY Manual transmission help IP: Logged
Message: OK guys, guess I get the idiot of the day award. I was under my truck starting to change the transmission fluid. found the drain plug, then was looking for the fill plug. Found a bolt that looked like it could be the fill plug, started to take it out (and yes something in the back of my mind was telling me it didnt seem right) after i got it out so far, something moved into its way and now I cannot get it back in. Talk about a nervous guy. SO I have bo idea what it does or how to get it back in. The bolt is about 3 inches long and is located on the left side of the transmission and is put in horizontally. If anyone out there has any idea what it is or how to get it back in I would greatly appreciate it. I thought about changing gears, but not sure what that might do. Please Help

Message: Let me qualify the following by first saying I'm no expert and getting a Dodge mechanic may be your safest bet.
I have an '03 with the NV3500 man. transmission. Looking underneath the truck there is only one horizontal bolt (not counting the housing bolts) which seems to hold in the "shift shaft detent plunger" and its spring per the shop manual. unfortunately they don't show a picture of this bolt. According to the shop manual all assembly is done with the transmission in neutral. Is your tranny in neutral??

Message: Jim,
No, it is not in neutral, I went out to the library and found a repair manual. from what I saw from the repair manual, the piece that the bolt was holding is the idler shaft support, a half moon shape that goes supperts the reverse idler shaft, I am hoping that i can somehow, maybe through the drain hole, move it back into position. if that does not work then i might end up pulling the tranny.

Message: maybe you ougtta blow the $ 15 bucks for a haynes manual at autozone.
But then there's no challenge in doing it right.

Message: OK, Jim: thanks for the help, i managed to spin it back to position and got the bolt back in, so thanks for trying to help. I just used a screwdriver to rotate it back to position, about crapped my pants when the screwdriver went into the hole, and it held long enough to get the bolt back in.
